2026 Asian Games: Are India Favorites? Mohammad Kaif Gives Answers

India’s men’s cricket team will begin their 2026 Asian Games campaign later this month with the responsibility of defending the gold medal won in Hangzhou in 2023. The Shreyas Iyer-led side has been handed direct entry into the quarterfinals, where it will face the second-placed team from Group A on September 28.

Mohammad Kaif Believes Pitches, Infrastructure Will Determine India’s Campaign

Mohammad Kaif did not simply focus on India’s names and experience when discussing the Asian Games. Instead, he pointed towards factors away from the usual international cricket environment that could test the team.

The former India batter said Indian players are accustomed to high-end hotels and cricket facilities. He questioned what the accommodation would be like at the Asian Games and also raised uncertainty over the nature of the pitches in Japan:

“Our new players have grown up living in 7-star hotels. They live in 5-star hotels during the IPL, so I don’t know what the facilities will be like at the Asian Games 2026. I read somewhere recently that there might be small rooms, I don’t know what it’s going to be, “the cricketer said.

New York spongy pitch troubled India’s T20 WC 2024 campaign – Kaif reveals

Mohammad Kaif made a direct example regarding how pitches could hamper India’s Asian Games 2026 campaign. He referred to the team’s struggles at the T20 WC 2024 on New York pitches, where uneven bounce and spongy grounds limited players’ abilities:

“I also don’t know how the pitches are going to be. When we went to New York for the T20 World Cup 2024, the players were troubled because of the spongy pitches and uneven bounce. The Indian players are not used to these kinds of issues,” he added.

Kaif Says, “Gold Medal is Confirmed” If India Overcome Specific Hurdles

The veteran believes India will secure gold at Aichi-Nagoya if they can get top-of-the-line facilities and good grounds to showcase their abilities:

“They are used to good pitches, good grounds, and hotels. If India manage to overcome these issues, then the gold medal is confirmed,” Mohammad concluded.

India Are Defending Asian Games Champions

India won the men’s cricket gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. Ruturaj Gaikwad captained that squad to defeat Bangladesh in the semifinal before the final against Afghanistan was abandoned because of persistent rain. India were awarded the gold medal because they were the higher-seeded team.

Shreyas Iyer Leads a Strong Squad

Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain of India for the Asian Games. The squad was originally announced with several prominent names before changes were made ahead of team travel to Japan.

The updated squad includes Iyer, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yash Thakur and Vipraj Nigam.

India have plenty of T20 experience to rely on

Several squad players have major experience in T20 cricket, and this lineup includes players who have represented India at the highest level and featured regularly in the IPL.

The Japan Conditions Remain an Important Question

The cricket competition will be staged at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, with the men’s event scheduled from September 24 to October 3. India’s opening match is not until September 28 because of its seeded position. India therefore has additional time before entering the knockout phase, although the team will need to understand the venue quickly.

India’s Route to the Knockouts Is Already Set

The men’s competition features 10 teams. Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal form Group A, while Hong Kong, Malaysia and Oman are placed in Group B. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the seeded sides that enter directly into the quarter-finals.

India’s quarter-final on September 28 will be against the second-placed team from Group A. The other quarter-finals will involve Pakistan against the second-placed side from Group B, Sri Lanka against the Group A winner and Bangladesh against the Group B winner.

Retired India Cricketer Believes Team Must Aim for More than Gold

Ex-Team India cricketer Mohit Sharma believes the team must target a dominant performance at the ongoing Asian Games. Sharma says there will be questions to answer if India’s men cricket contingent fail to secure commanding performances throughout the competition:

“I don’t think the goal here is winning, I think it is dominance. You are not just going to play or participate in the Asian Games; you are going to dominate. If we don’t dominate the teams with this squad in the Asian Games then somewhere or the other there must be a mistake,” Mohit Sharma said.
