4 Controversial Umpiring Decisions In IPL 2024

The ongoing Indian Premier League season has not been free of controversy in recent games. Unclear decisions from umpires have left fans and players of multiple IPL franchises red-faced in 2024. The controversy among umpiring decisions has seen repeat calls from numerous fans and ex-cricketers for reforms.

A seeming downfall in the quality of officiating could affect the IPL’s overall brand. Let’s explore these decisions and events unfolding after each one.

RCB vs KKR – Virat Kohli’s Dismissal

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) locked horns with Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 21st, 2024. The suspense-filled fixture did not disappoint as KKR ran away lucky winners with a 1-run margin. Shreyas Iyer and his KKR teammates were quite lucky throughout this game, especially after Kohli’s dismissal.

In this game, Virat Kohli was dismissed after he faced Harshit Rana outside his crease area. The veteran RCB batter was sure the ball was not below his waist height as he swung at it during this game.

Ball tracking software suggested that Harshit’s ball could have dipped if Kohli was within his crease region. The third empire will overrule this result. Umpires agreed that Kohli was not within his crease and Harshit’s delivery dipped and was below the RCB batter’s waistline. Their conclusion claimed that the ball was legal, dismissing Kohli from his batting duties.

Events that trailed Kohli’s dismissal

Comments from Harsha Bhogle

Respected sports analysts were not convinced about the dismissal, and Harsha Bhogle lent his voice to fans’ furore by saying ”RCB have been robbed here. Bhogle’s comments were in line with ICC laws, where Law 41.7.1 states that:

Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is to be deemed to be unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker. If the bowler bowls such a delivery, the umpire shall immediately call and signal No ball.”

Kohli gets penalized

Virat was sanctioned for his outburst after his dismissal, and the IPL followed up the matter with a hefty fine. Kohli will have to part with 50% of his match dues as he is adjudged to have breached the IPL’s Code of Conduct. A statement from the IPL concerning the matter included this excerpt:

Kohli committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the statement read.

Kohli accepted the fine and did not contest the IPL’s stance on this matter. However, fans still believe Kohli, who was at 18 after seven deliveries, would have turned the game’s tide if the decision went RCB’s way.

RCB vs KKR – Unclear Runs Score

The game involving RCB vs KKR at IPL 2024 was filled with controversy. Another umpiring decision cast a shadow over KKR’s slim victory, especially after the decision against RCB batter Suyash Prabhudessai. Dinesh Karthik paired with Prabhudessai as both cricketers aimed to exceed KKR’s set target (223).

The 17th over saw a controversial decision taint the game’s overall excitement. Prabhudessai square off against KKR bowler Varun Chakaravarthy. The RCB batter hit the ball towards a boundary region, and many fans thought he got a six.

However, on-field umpires will not request assistance from the third official before handing out a four. Fans were certain of Suyash hitting a six in that encounter; however, the umpires seemed to deduct two runs unfairly.

Such umpiring decision has not helped the image of IPL officiating. Fans, ex-cricketers, and commentators believe such decisive calls should receive proper checks before confirmation.

RCB vs KKR – No Ball Undeclared

The game involving RCB vs KKR saw yet another controversy, calling several decisions from the match officials into question. In this game, umpires failed to declare a no-ball after on-field officials failed to spot the event.

Fans would later notice in replays that Sunil Narine bowled an unfair ball during an over. The low attention span of umpires to this occurrence coupled with their controversial decisions stunned fans.

DC vs GT – Unfair Dismissal

Game 41 of the IPL saw the Delhi Capitals (DC) face off against Gujarat Titans (GT). A catch from Noor Ahmad raised questions among fans, and it was dubbed that this catch was not clean. Prithvi Shaw was forced to play a pull shot after receiving a deliver from GT’s Sandeep Warrier. Shaw missed the pull shot and Noor received the ball around the deep square leg region.

Fans and commentators were not convinced with this decision and it continues to brew talking points as a controversial decision.
