New reports suggest that the International Cricket Council (ICC) could take a vote among members to settle current logistics standoffs between India and Pakistan.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is unwilling to send their players into neighbouring Pakistan citing security concerns. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials have come out to request the BCCI’s concerns be put in writing as the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches.
ICC officials currently face organization challenges as both cricket boards refuse to enter an agreement before the tournament slated for February 2025.
There are reports that the BCCI could get their way, since they hold sway at the ICC. The BCCI’s current secretary Jay Shah is also set to become ICC Chairman next month, increasing chances of bias in resolving the matter.
ICC to Hold Emergency Meeting on India-Pakistan Champions Trophy Saga
Cricket’s international governing body looks set to hold a high-stakes emergency meeting amid current Champions Trophy issues involving India and Pakistan. This comes after ICC officials sent a letter to the PCB stating India’s refusal to send their players into Pakistan.
The scheduled meeting will reportedly have top-ranking officials from all three governing bodies amid the search for compromise. There will likely be a vote among stakeholders to confirm the course of action while ending current disputes involving both countries.
India has not travelled into Pakistan since 2008 after political tensions worsened between both nations after a terrorist attack on Indian soil. However, Pakistan usually honours match obligations in India, with their most-recent visit coming at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
ICC Likely to Explore Back Channels to Resolve BCCI-PCB Standoff
Former Men in Green cricketer Shoaib Akhtar believes there will be back-channel talks between Pakistan and India as the Champions Trophy 2025 hosting dilemma intensifies:
“It’s really up to the governments. It’s nothing to do with the BCCI. It is up to the BJP government. They will decide. There will be back-channel talks. Even in days of war, there are back-channel talks. We should not lose hope. We have to look forward to a solution. We know a fact that 95-98 per cent of sponsorship for ICC comes from India,” Akhtar said.
Akhtar’s statement seemed to suggest that the PCB will eventually bow to pressure and settle for a hybrid model. However, it is unclear if the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB will entertain any talk of a hybrid model this time around.
ICC Champions Trophy Tour Begins Amid Hosting Dilemma
Pakistan’s cricket board officially kicked off the ICC Champions Trophy tour on November 19, 2024. The development comes amid growing uncertainty over where next year’s edition of this tournament will hold. Political squabbles involving Pakistan and India seems to permeate sporting relationships between both countries.
However, the PCB officials started the trophy tour with displays across locations in Khanpur, Islamabad, and Taxila. Star Pakistan cricketers like Shoaib Akhtar and Shadab Khan were part of the trophy display as it made its way across the country.
