5 most expensive players in the IPL 2024 auction: From Mitchell Starc to Alzarri Joseph

The franchises employed special techniques by shelling out their expenses and grabbed these top 5 expensive players in the IPL 2024 auction:

1. Mitchell Starc (AUSTRALIA): INR 24.75 crores to KKR

Earlier, Mitchell Starc represented RCB in 2014 and 2015. He grabbed 34 wickets in 26 innings.

Whereas in T20Is, he grabbed 73 wickets in 56 innings. Recently, in the World Cup 2023 tournament, Mitchell Starc took 16 wickets in 10 matches.

Moments before Starc was sold, Gujarat Titans were leading with INR 22.50 crores. Within a short time, Kolkata Knight Riders finalized the deal by offering a lucrative package of INR 24.50 crores.

Ultimately, Starc topped amongst the expensive players in the IPL 2024 auction as well as in the entire IPL history.

KKR had to continue the bidding war with the remaining purse value of INR 6.95 crore, after making a costly purchase.

Finally, the 33-year-old Australian pacer, after 8 years makes a comeback into the IPL (Indian Premier League).

2. Pat Cummins ( AUSTRALIA): INR 20.50 crores to SRH

The Australian pacer and World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins entered the IPL auction with a base price of INR 2 crores.

His price tag rose to a peak level with the involvement of these franchises during the bidding war namely Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Mumbai Indians (MI).

CSK opened up the bidding contest with a leading figure of INR 4.80 crores. Eventually, the price skyrocketed above the 10-crore mark with the involvement of other franchises in the contest.

RCB continued to compete by crossing INR 16.75 crore, which was indeed the highest bid in the IPL history.

Finally, Sunrisers Hyderabad bid for INR 20.50 crores and he became the most expensive player in IPL history.

Later, his teammate Mitchell Starc overtook his position, thereby Cummins dropped to the 2nd position among the list of expensive players in the IPL 2024 auction.

He took 45 wickets in 42 IPL innings. Whereas, in T20 internationals, he picked up 55 wickets in 50 innings.

Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) were actively bidding on the talented New Zealand cricketer for above the 10-crore mark.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) concluded the bidding war in style, by finalizing the the deal for INR 14 crores.

Daryll surrounded by other expensive players in the IPL 2024 auction, ranks 3rd in the list.

Though his IPL career isn’t impressive, his contribution in T20Is is marvelous.

As a right-handed batsman, Mitchell gathered 1069 runs in 53 innings. Similarly, as a medium pacer, he took 8 wickets in 10 innings.

The New Zealand cricketer’s dual skills intensify the batting and bowling unit of CSK.

4. Harshal Patel (INDIA): INR 11.75 crores to PBKS

Punjab Kings (PBKS) grabbed Harshal Patel for INR 11.75 crores, thereby becoming the most expensive Indian cricketer in the IPL 2024 auction.

Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans commenced the bidding war beyond Harshal’s base price of INR 2 crores. 

As a result, the bid crossed the 10-crore mark. At a certain stage, Gujarat Titans opted out and Lucknow Super Giants tried their luck.

Finally, the 33-year-old medium-fast bowler grabbed a whopping package of INR 11.75 crores from Punjab Kings. Also, Harshal ranked fourth among the expensive players in the IPL 2024 auction.

In the IPL, he grabbed 111 wickets in 92 innings. On the other side, Harshal took 29 wickets in 24 innings.

5. Alzarri Joseph (WEST INDIES): INR 11.50 crores to RCB

Initially, many franchises like Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Delhi Capitals were bidding for Alzarri Joesph beyond his base price of INR 1 crore.

After some time, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) joined the contest and were leading with an 8-crore mark. In between, LSG tried to compete with RCB. 

Finally, RCB succeeded in grabbing the West Indies medium pacer for INR 11.50 crores. Thereby, Alzarri ranked 5th position in the list of expensive players in the IPL 2024 auction.

He took 20 wickets in 19 IPL innings. Similarly, in T20Is he grabbed 32 wickets in 19 innings at an economy rate of 8.77. Previously, the 27-year-old Caribbean pacer represented Gujarat Titans. After releasing Josh Hazlewood, RCB was able to strengthen their bowling unit by including Alzarri
