Gautam Gambhir To Become Team India’s Next Head Coach?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently searching for Team India’s new head coach. Indications suggest that Gautam Gambhir is now leading the race to replace fellow compatriot Rahul Dravid.

Several reports in recent weeks continue linking top names like Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, and others to the job. However, Gautam Gambhir seems to have leapfrogged other candidates to become Dravid’s most-likely successor. June 27, 2024 is the set deadline to submit names of candidates for the coaching role. Rahul Dravid is expected to bow out as head coach after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Fans believe Gambhir’s name should be among top options to clinch this role. Let’s explore every detail about Gambhir’s potential selection as Team India’s next head coach.

Why is Gautam Gambhir a Potential Fit as Team India’s Head Coach?

National team experience

Gautam Gambhir featured for India’s Men’s senior cricket team for several years. He also played vital roles in India’s cricket successes across formats as a professional player. Gambhir will bring a wealth of experience to the national fold, supporting cricketers to deliver their best in all competitions. The ex-cricketer also has an immense work ethic common to former Indian cricket internationals.

Deep understanding of Indian cricket

The current Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor has a great understanding of how cricket works in India. His understanding of India’s cricket scene became evident in recent weeks as KKR cruised to a third premier league title. Gambhir’s position as mentor proved pivotal as KKR players achieved great balance on their way to a successful season.

Fans would hope Gautam Gambhir brings his immense understanding of India’s cricket scene to the national stage.

Knowledge of India’s domestic cricket framework

Gambhir has played at different levels in India’s domestic cricket structure. Experience throughout several levels of domestic play gives Gambhir an edge over many candidates gunning for this role. Ashish Nehra is another candidate with similar qualities to Gambhir in the domestic cricket structure.

Great track record

Gautam Gambhir is a serial winner, and it seems Team India is in dire need of his successful mentorship skills right now. He secured the KKR’s first two IPL titles as a player (in 2012 and 2014) before returning to deliver a third title in a mentorship role. Gautam also has experience with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), guiding the franchise to a commendable playoffs finish.

Few coaches can match or surpass Gambhir’s track record as a player and mentor in India’s cricket scene right now.

BCCI Comments on Qualities of the New Head Coach

Jay Shah is the current BCCI secretary and has certain qualities in mind the new Team India coach should possess. The BCCI exec made this known in recent statements shared to the media:

Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks. It is crucial that our coach has an in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level,”

Shah’s comments shed more light on India’s search for a cricket coach. His words suggest that the BCCI seek an Indian as the next coach and it could be between Gautam Gambhir and Nehra.

What Do Cricketers Think About Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s Coach?

“It is down to him”

Ex-cricketer Tom Moody believes the choice to become Team India’s head coach rests entirely with Gambhir. He shared comments on developing events with the media, discussing Gautam Gambhir suitability as India’s cricket gaffer:

At the end of the day, it is down to him. Simple as that. If he wants it, it is his. Simple as that, regardless of the result. It is weather he wants that. It is a huge responsibility, a huge commitment. Maybe he thinks that, I have had only year back at KKR, my journey is only just beginning. Maybe that journey of Indian coach is another three years time, but I want to complete the story here first. I have only taken first step with the franchise“,

“I really wish he takes it”

Talented Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik is in full support of Gautam Gambhir’s potential role as Team India head coach. Karthik weighed in on the subject, saying:

“He has really built a good team, one that will have a lot of players retained, and he’s left them in a very, very good place. If he gets the opportunity, I really wish he takes it. Being part of the national team and the patriotism that he has, I think he will definitely be tempted to take it”.
