Harbhajan Singh’s RACIST COMEBACK! Then Andrew Symonds, Now Jofra Archer?

Being a commentator for the 2025 season of Indian Premier League (IPL), the former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh became the controversial hotspot. There were days when the 44-year-old faced racism himself during his playing career. But now being a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha and a television celebrity, his remarks stunned many and led to widespread backlash online.

Harbhajan was the commentator for the IPL match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) on 23rd March 2025. During this match, his comments on Jofra Archer (in Hindi language) became the reason for hatred towards the former Indian spin bowler.

Having triggered a throwback to 2008, Harbhajan made a Racist Comeback in 2025 where the talented spin bowler spoiled his name with a racist comparison of Andrew Symonds to a monkey.

Harbhajan Singh’s Controversial Commentary

Commentaries turning out to be controversies aren’t new in the world of cricket. But as in Harbhajan’s case, the backlashes on the internet are for making racist comments about Jofra Archer, a Barbadian-English cricketer.

The netizens voice out questions about how could someone like Harbhajan make such a disgusting racist comparison when he had faced racism in his playing career.

The former Indian spin bowler commented in Hindi saying “London mein kaaali Taxi ka meter tez bhaagtha hai!! Yahaan pe toh Archer saab ka meter aur bhi tez bhaaga hai.”

And, this translates to “In London, the black taxi’s meter runs faster. But here we have Archer sir’s meter running faster.”

Amidst Backlashes, Some Positivity Here & There!

Every search result about Harbhajan Singh on Google now shows up this controversy. In Between such a heated moment, only a few positively supported Harbhajan’s comment, like he meant to refer to the speed of London’s Black Taxi meter to Jofra’s bowling meter.

However, the positivity makes no sense here, as it was not what the commentator meant to say. His sentence structure and vocal style clearly denotes that he wanted to be humorous, he wanted the audience to laugh over it. Indeed, a few might have laughed at that moment, but still a comment on color and skin tone is meant to be considered “RACISM”.

“Ban the Racist Commentator!”: Netizens Voice out on Harbhajan

What made Harbhajan a Racist Commentator? He had been a great spin bowler, a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha, a Television Celebrity, and has many more successes to his name. Despite that, a controversial comment he made during the IPL 2025 match, collapsed the positive image amongst the public.

Be it X, Facebook, or Instagram, most of the post related to the former Indian spinner has a comment saying “Ban the Racist Commentator.”

Although a few supporters backed his comment stating it wasn’t meant to criticize the color or skin tone. However, it was quite clear in the commentator’s diction that he was trying to be humorous.

Harbhajan meant to compare the London Black Taxi with Jofra Archer, indirectly commenting on his dark-colored skin. And, that is the reason people have started hating him for being a racist on widespread commentary.

What is the Reason for the Extended Outrage against Harbhajan Singh?

Amidst controversies surrounding him, Harbhajan has not even expressed guilt on Social media. People expected that he would appear in front of the media to talk about this issue and apologize to Jofra Archer.

Not even a social media post to apologize? Despite facing the consequences of such disgusting racist comments, one would appear to seek forgiveness. But Harbhajan Singh is silent on this and hasn’t turned up on this issue. And, this behavior has become the reason for extended outrage against the 44-year-old Indian cricketer.

Not First Time! Harbhajan’s Earlier Controversies

Controversies in the world of Cricket are not the first time, and for Harbhajan too. Here are some of the major incidents in former Indian cricketer’s career timeline which had his involvement in the disputed issues.

●      Slapgate Incident (2008)

●      Monkeygate Scandal (2008)

Similar to the 2025’s Racist comment, back in 2008 Harbhajan was publicly accused of making a racial reference against Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds. He compared the cricketer’s face to that of a monkey, which was an intolerable comment. This incident happened during a Test match, which further caused severe conflict between the Indian and Australian teams.

●      Ambati Rayudu Argument (2016)

While Harbhajan was playing for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2016, he indulged in a heated argument with his teammate Ambati Rayudu regarding a fielding error.

●      Racist Remark on Jofra Archer (2025)

As mentioned above, though Harbhajan is a respected cricketer for his bowling talents, RACISM will neither be accepted nor forgiven. This issue has triggered a throwback to the 2008 Racist comment on Andrew Symonds, and now it is Jofra Archer. However, these are just a few of the major controversies, but the actual number of incidents are more in which Harbhajan has been the hotspot of allegations
