Out-of-form English batter Harry Brook risks a 2-season ban from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The cricketer is set to abandon an agreement reached with the Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of IPL 2025. Fans were left in shock after Brook announced his intention to withdraw from the marquee T20 franchise competition.
Brook Releases a Statement on Imminent Withdrawal from IPL 2025
A social media post from Brook’s official handle read out the statement confirming his intention to back out of IPL 2025:
“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL; I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters” Brook shared via the statement on March 9, 2025.
“I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy I have dreamt of playing for my country and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level.
“With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision. It is a really important time for England cricket and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series.
“In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus. I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive,” Brook said.
Brook Risks 2-Year Ban From IPL
The IPL Governing Council released a set of guidelines for all auctioned players ahead of the IPL 2025 season. These rules recommend a 2-season ban for any player that abandons their IPL contract before the beginning of any season:
“Any player who registers in the auction and after getting picked, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, will get banned from participating for two seasons,” a section of the new guidelines read.
How Many IPL Seasons Has Brook Played in So Far?
Harry has only one IPL season in his record so far as a professional cricketer. He took part in IPL 2023 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Brook took part in 11 innings and scored 190 runs throughout these encounters with a 123.3 strike rate and 21.1 average.
His best IPL performance came against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he snatched a 100. He has that sole century in his IPL career so far. Brook hit 4 sixes and 23 fours during his debut season before failing to make the cut at IPL 2024.
The cricketer has not managed an impressive IPL performance by many standards since his sole season. He continues to struggle on the grand stage as evident in his most-recent performances in limited-overs cricket.
