How Individual Toll of Hughes Death Still Haunts Australia

Phillip Hughes’ neck was struck by a short pitch on November 25, 2014 and passed on shortly after from his injuries. The cricketer was one of Australia’s most promising players at that time, and it’s been 10 years since his passing. Hughes’ freak injury shocked the cricket fraternity, but the effects of his death will send tremors across Australia’s sporting industry.

Several players who were Hughes’ teammates struggled to cope with his sudden demise, and it’s not been any easier a decade after.

How Did Phillip Hughes Die?

Hughes passed on in hospital due to a dissection in his vertebral artery. The dissection led to bleeding throughout his brain, causing his early demise at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney on November 27, 2014. He was 25 years old.

How Hughes Death Exerted a Heavy Toll on Australian Cricketers

Michael Clarke

National team captain Clarke regretted not retiring immediately after Hughes’ death. The cricketer was in tears while giving a public eulogy of Hughes before leading Australia to a tribute Test vs India. The Aussie’s form dwindled for long periods after that event, and he claims retirement should have been the best choice for him then.

Glenn Maxwell

It would take several years before cricket fans would understand why Glenn Maxwell’s form dropped right after Phillip’s death. His form was so bad that a journalist described him as one experiencing “a mental breakdown” with his form “deteriorating alarmingly” – this was shortly after Hughes’ death.

Maxwell and Hughes were age-group teammates and shared a close relationship before the latter’s passing. Fans made fun of Maxwell’s terrible form, particularly in Big Bash League (BBL) games, but his tell-all book revealed his emotional state after Hughes died.

Peter Siddle

Siddle was born on November 25, the day Hughes suffered the freak injury that would claim his life. Both players were national teammates, and Hughes says he can’t shake off memories of the demised Aussie anytime soon. Siddle reported being weighed down with sadness whenever anyone mentions his birthday, and it’s a heavy emotional toll to bear.

Memories of Hughes’ Death Filter Into 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT)

Australia faced India in a tribute Test shortly after Phillip’s sad demise. Both teams are currently gearing up for a long Test series encounter in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024/25. India leads the first Test after their hard-fought win over Australia in Perth, but fans can’t seem to shake off memories of Hughes’ passing years after.

The talented cricketer was primed for great things, but saw his budding career cut short by a freak occurrence.

Some players from the 2014 Australia team are facing India a decade after Hughes’ death, and memories of his demise are still fresh in everyone’s minds. Players like Travis Head, Nathan Lyon, and Mitchell Starc were part of the tribute match squad after Hughes’ painful passing.

Other former players from that squad like David Warner, Brad Haddin, and Callum Ferguson are now into sports commentary.

India capitalizes on a disjointed Aussie side amid Hughes’ remembrance

India seemed to capitalize on a shabby-looking Australia team as they coasted to a victory in the first Test. Media reports suggested a pathetic showing from Australia showed poor thinking and composure throughout each Test Day. The Sydney Morning Herald seemed to capture how Australia’s Test team seemed ill-prepared or distracted before facing India:

“Australia, a team that prided itself on composure and clear thinking, has looked lost throughout, essentially from the moment Jasprit Bumrah destroyed their top order on the first evening of the game,” the report stated.

The next Test in Adelaide is also on schedule to coincide with a memorial for Hughes on December 6, 2024. There could be a challenge
