High-flying Team India cricketer Sai Sudharsan was initially a part of the team’s squad for a two-match Test against Sri Lanka. However, the cricketer could not recover from a minor stress reaction in his right toe on time. Sudharsan will now have to stay behind as India face Sri Lanka from August 15, 2026 in Galle.
Sudharsan Injury Presents Major Setback Before Crucial Test
Sai’s injury trouble is a setback for India ahead of their first Test against the hosts. He was on schedule to play an important role in the top order, but his absence now opens the door for another batter to step into India’s Test XI and potentially make an immediate impression in Sri Lanka.
Was Sudharsan Added to Test Squad Without Proving His Fitness?
Sudharsan was originally named in India’s 15-member squad for the two-Test assignment, but his availability was made conditional on clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence. The same condition applied to Jasprit Bumrah when the squad was first announced on July 28.
The selectors now confirm the worst-case outcome for Sudharsan. His toe problem has kept him from being cleared for the series, and India will have to enter the Sri Lanka Tests without a batter who had been part of the team’s plans for the No. 3 position.
Khan Becomes Sudharsan’s Replacement
India has moved quickly to address the vacancy created by Sudharsan’s withdrawal. Sarfaraz Khan is set to replace Sudharsan in India’s tour of their neighbours. The decision brings the Mumbai batter back into the Test setup after he was left out of the original squad announced for the Sri Lanka tour.
Sarfaraz’s recall is another angle to India’s batting selection. Khan demonstrates his ability for run-scoring with impressive First-Class cricket performances. His return to the Test team offers an experienced option rather than forcing the management to turn immediately to an uncapped batter.
Devdutt Padikkal Could Move Up the Order After Sudharsan’s Absence
Devdutt Padikkal is one of the players who could benefit most from Sudharsan’s unfortunate injury layoff. The left-hander is a part of the squad and strengthened his case by producing a century during India’s four-day practice match in Colombo.
His unbeaten century in the practice match provides India with encouraging evidence ahead of the opening Test. It also offers selectors a ready-made option from a player who is already travelling with the team and has experience of playing international cricket.
India vs Sri Lanka Last 10 Head-to-Head in Tests
Team India has been on a decent run against Sri Lanka in recent Test meetings. Shubman Gill and his teammates will approach the encounter with optimism, since Sri Lanka has failed to secure a victory against their opponents in over a decade.
Sudharsan’s absence could be a major challenge for the visitors to overcome; however, other options could rise to the occasion to ensure India in Whites secure victory.
