India is Asia’s major cricket nation, but the country may lose their dominance over tournament hosting rights in the region until 2033. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) currently holds hosting rights for the Asia Cup 2025; however, they may not possess such a right until 2033.
BCCI Set to Lose Frequent Hosting Rights Due to ACC Rotation
A recent report stated that the Asia Cricket Council (ICC) will adopt a schedule that will see three upcoming Asia Cups hosted outside India. These tournaments are slated to hold in 2027, 2029, and 2031. Other ACC member countries like Bangladesh (2027 hosts), Pakistan (2029 hosts), and Sri Lanka (2031 hosts) will get their respective chances to host Asia’s premier limited-overs competition.
Will India Visit Pakistan for Asia Cups in the Future?
Current political tensions between India and Pakistan continues to strain their sporting relationship. Both nations now adopt a “hybrid model” hosting template that okays the scheduling of games involving either country at a neutral venue.
For example, Pakistan’s T20I squad will not play any of their upcoming Asia Cup 2025 games in India according to current arrangements. The Men in Green will field their squad against opposing teams in the UAE or Sri Lanka going forward.
Their stance is in response to India’s refusal to send an ODI team to Pakistan during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India won the ICC Champions Trophy, but hosting issues and fan complaints overshadowed their victory in Dubai for a tournament originally scheduled to happen entirely in Pakistan.
The Pahalgam terror incident in India earlier this year also exerted further pressure on Pakistan-India relations. Continued boycotts of both teams concerning tours in either country prolongs security and logistics challenges hosts face whenever India must play Pakistan in a competitive game.
Will Reduced Hosting Dull the BCCI’s Regional Influence in Cricket?
India is an undisputed leader in the Asian cricket circuit; however, being without frequent hosting rights for over half-a-decade may have a negative effect. The Men in Blue command significant attention in regional and global cricket. Their influence usually determines the success or failure of competitive tournaments, as India’s squads bring significant financial injection into tournaments.
Why Does the ACC Adopt a Rotational Hosting Cycle?
The regional cricket council deploys a rotational cycle for selecting Asia Cup hosts to mirror the ICC. For example, the ACC aligns the 2027 and 2031 ODI Asia Cups to fall within the 2028 and 2032 ICC World Cups. The body also schedules the T20I Asia Cups for 2025 and 2029 to mirror the ICC’s 2026 and 2029 T20 World Cups.
ACC’s template aims to synchronise the preparedness of teams ahead of high-value competitions on the international stage. Some member nations can take full advantage of the aligned schedules to tweak their squads towards better performances against non-Asian teams.
Have Neutral Venues Involving India Damaged the Reputation of ACC Events in Recent Years?
The persistent request from India to have their matches against Pakistan hosted in neutral venues is a major challenge for regional and international cricket bodies.
For example, India refused to tour Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 citing security concerns and opted to play all their games in the UAE. Their requests for neutral venues have also come up during ACC-competitions like the Asia Cup 2023.
Pakistan had to agree to hosting 9 out of 13 games in that tournament away from home before India clinched the trophy to extend their regional dominance.
Scheduling conflicts and clear logistical nightmares arise whenever India has to visit Pakistan for any cricket match. However, this is now a two-way affair after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as Pakistan will no longer visit India for any high-level cricket encounter.
The continued back-and-forth may dent the image and reputation of cricket tournaments going forward. Some cricket legends are already voicing out concern over repeated issues involving India and Pakistan in international cricket.
Both countries may find it difficult to resolve their political differences in an instant, but a sporting truce could be in the interest of these nations and cricket authorities.
Home Affairs Ministry Okays Pakistan Team to Play in India During Multinational Competitions
A source within the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed to reporters that the Indian government has no issue with Pakistani teams touring India for multi-team competitions. The source made this known as India gave the green light to Pakistan’s hockey team to participate in a regional cup competition in India:
“We are not against any team competing in India in a multi-national competition. But bilateral is different. International sports demands that we cannot back out from competing. Russia and Ukraine are at war but they show up at multi-national events,” the source said.
