IPL 2024: Five Young Cricketers Who Caught the Eye

The IPL 2024 season came to a befitting climax with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) claiming a third title. Fans were treated to an exciting spectacle throughout the season with some young stars announcing their arrival on cricket’s biggest stage. Youngsters signed to various franchises and gave us several reasons to anticipate future IPL seasons with bated breath.

This season, five (5) top talents have shown promise to become the very best in IPL cricket as future editions come by. Let’s explore top young cricketers who caught the eye of fans, commentators, and teammates at IPL 2024.

Abhishek Sharma

The list of top IPL 2024 youngsters will be incomplete without India’s Abhishek Sharma. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) relied on the 23-year-old’s performance to book a place at the final.

Sharma contributed 484 runs to SRH’s overall runs tally, striking the franchise to several victories against tough opposition. Sharma also snatched an impressive strike rate of 200. His lethal partnership with talismanic Aussie Travis Head proved pivotal to SRH’s great performance this season.

Sharma’s contribution was not in the batting order alone, as he proved to be capable as a bowler. The youngster managed a couple of wickets against a determined Rajasthan Royals (RR) team. His wickets helped Hyderabad secure a win over their rivals on their way to the final. Sharma’s half-century (66) also helped SRH get a play-offs spot over other franchises.

Fans were left shocked when India’s cricket board excluded Sharma’s name from the World Cup squad. The youngster can break into India’s national team in the future with such great performances.

Jake Fraser-McGurk

The Australian prodigy produced an impressive performance in his debut season as an IPL cricketer. Fraser-McGurk shattered low expectations among some sets of fans as a debutant, roaring to an impressive tally at IPL 2024.

The 22-year-old starter came on as a replacement for injured Lungi Ngidi and did everything right in each over. He smashed home 330 runs after nine games, recording a mammoth strike rate of 234. The Delhi Capitals (DC) looks set to rely on his services at IPL 2025 as they seek T20 cricket glory.

Australia added the youngster to their T20 World Cup 2024 lineup after he blew away opposition teams during IPL 2024. The prodigy’s inclusion to Australia’s squad does a lot to underscore his potential as a top player for future competitions.

Jake has been so lethal for DC prompting greats like Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly to applaud his talents. He already has two ODI caps for Team Australia and looks set to earn more outings with his national side.

Matheesha Pathirana

Sri Lanka has a potential generational talent on their hands with Matheesha Pathirana. The 21-year-old Lankan pace bowler delivered eye-catching performances for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at IPL 2024. Pathirana has an ability to make runs-scoring harder for opposing teams in concluding overs. He also possesses the skills to take wickets at will.

Pathirana snatched 13 wickets after six games before succumbing to a nasty injury. Fans expect he will be back stronger after recovery to deliver impressive performances CSK need to thrive. The Chennai-based outfit obviously missed his wicket-taking abilities, succumbing to a pedestrian Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). That loss spelled CSK’s exit from the IPL 2024.

Many sports analysts and commentators liken the young Lankan bowler to great compatriot Lasith Malinga. Comparisons between both players may seem premature, but Pathirana looks set to earn his stride as a capable bowler. The young cricketer made it to Sri Lanka’s final list of players to feature at the T20 World Cup 2024.

Tristan Stubbs

Delhi Capitals (DC) paid a paltry ₹50 lakh to secure the services of Tristan Stubbs at auction. The South African has become well worth the investment, becoming one of DC’s most-lethal swingers this season. However, his finishing abilities were not sufficient to hand DC IPL glory as they ranked sixth overall in 2024.

The cricketer delivered several impressive outings in the closing overs, managing a decent 297.3 strike rate. Another of his impressive performances included a twenty-five ball half-century (57) against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Stubbs is part of The Proteas’ squad to the T20 World Cup 2024.

Will Jacks

England’s 25-year-old all-rounder Will Jacks delivered several impressive performances with the RCB. Fans won’t forget his 41-ball century in a hurry versus the Gujarat Titans (GT). The young swinger looks set to play important roles in RCB’s future quests for an IPL title. His lethal partnership with Virat Kohli underscores the wealth of talent Jacks has in store.

He is part of England’s squad to the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean.
