South African batter Tristan Stubbs could get his breakthrough IPL season in 2025. The talented Proteas batsman has had a checkered history in India’s top limited-overs competition since 2022. The Delhi Capitals (DC) star is set for his fourth straight IPL season and fans hope he will deliver better performances than in previous editions.
Stibbs attributes his batting prowess to a mental shift in recent years:
“It was a big mental thing. I was doing some dumb things out there, so I learned how to keep my cool when things got tough. Now, I hope I can keep improving and do that when it really count” Stubbs said during a recent interview.
The SA20 and IPL star batter could enter another phase in his career with a decent performance this season.

Mumbai struggles
Tristan spent two seasons at the Mumbai Indians (MI) but failed to make a mark at the 5-time IPL champions. He remembers being fascinated by Mumbai’s high-stakes cricket culture:
“The first year in Mumbai was tough, …the biggest thing I struggled with was that it was cricket all the time. Without knowing it, by then I had become quite good at getting away from the game,” he said during a recent interview.
A need for adjustment
Stubbs admits that his first stint as an IPL player showed him how Indians value the sport and why he had to improve his game:
“And then, on my first trip to India, I would go from the ground to the hotel, and from the hotel to the ground. At the hotel, all the TV channels seemed to have cricket on. In the lobby, everyone wanted a picture. So I needed to make quite an adjustment.”
Commitment to fewer teams
Tristan suggests that his success as a cricketer comes from his decision to represent fewer teams overall:
“I play my best when I’m fully invested in the team, so I don’t want to spread myself too far and then give a half-hearted effort; I’d rather commit to fewer teams and give them my all,” he said. He only plays for teams that offer good financial deals in the SA20 and IPL:
“I am very fortunate in that my SA20 and IPL deals are very good financially. That gives me the freedom to plan my calendar, whereas some guys might feel they have to play a few T20 leagues to make that extra buck,” he added.
On different cricket formats
Stubbs admits the technical and mentally-draining requirements of Test cricket. He believes T20 requires risk-taking over being able to maintain stable discipline red-ball cricket requires:
“The biggest thing in the red-ball game is to be mentally fresh and disciplined. In a T20 you have to be the exact opposite and be willing to take a risk. After a Test match it takes two or three days for me to calm down. The body’s alright, but mentally it’s draining.”
Stubbs believes Test cricket demands greater discipline and requires batters to stay switched on:
“When you’re fielding you don’t want to make a mistake and when you’re batting you have to be so switched on. Because you’ve got to come back tomorrow and what happened yesterday is probably still in your mind.”
Tristan Stubbs IPL Batting Performance So Far (2022 – 2024)
IPL 2022
Stubbs could only take part in 2 matches at IPL 2022 with the Mumbai Indians. His limited opportunities on the big stage at that time and two innings meant Stubbs could only manage 2 runs from 4 balls all season. He had a unit average and 50.0 strike rate that season.
Stubbs recorded no boundaries or dismissals in that season, and his minimal game time affected his ascension to cricket stardom that year.
IPL 2023
The MI franchise gave Stubbs just 2 matches to showcase his skillset again at IPL 2023. Stubbs will take advantage of this limited time slot to deliver 25 runs at a 12.5 average. He achieved this tally with an 80.6 strike rate after 31 balls. Tristan hit a couple of 4s during this short stint with no other chance for bigger tallies all season.
IPL 2024
Stubbs moved to DC and got enough game time to showcase his talent at IPL 2024. The skilled batsman featured in 14 games and 13 innings with a remarkable 378-run haul all season. He recorded a robust 54.0 average and 190.9 strike rate (71 high score) in that edition. Stubbs also recorded three 50s, twenty-four 4s, and twenty-six 6s throughout IPL 2024. He also achieved decent fielding numbers with 7 catches to contribute immensely to DC’s charge throughout that season.
