IPL 2026: 4 Unknown Players Turned Breakout Stars This Season

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is cricket’s most entertaining franchise-level competition for one reason – anything can happen all season. Some of the top youngsters at local and international level converge each year for a chance to make it at franchise cricket’s biggest stage. Several young and unknown players usually get their wish each season, and IPL 2026 is no different.

Multiple franchises give previously-unknown players a chance to prove their worth, and these talents grabbed the opportunities this season without delay. Let’s check out some unknown IPL 2026 players who earned their breakout campaign this season.

1. Ayush Mhatre – Chennai Super Kings

18-year-old Ayush Mhatre had not made his mark in mainstream cricket before bagging a contract with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of IPL 2025. Mhatre grabbed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with both hands and currently has over 400 runs in 13 innings across two seasons for the Yellow Army.

Mhatre’s output this season differs slightly from his contribution last season; however, his approach to secure runs in 2026 attracts deserved fan attention.

2. Prince Yadav – Lucknow Super Giants

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) handed the-then 28-year-old Yadav his IPL debut in 2025; however, the bowler could not make any meaningful impact that season with 6 wickets to show for all his efforts. Yadav shrugged off the disappointment of 2025 and announced his arrival among top wicket-takers during IPL 2026.

The star bowler bagged 14 wickets in as many games at IPL 2026 to register his impressive scalp-securing potential among top players this season. LSG fans expressed disappointment at the franchise’s poor campaign this season, but many supporters singled out positives from squad players like Yadav.

3. Ashok Sharma – Gujarat Titans

23-year-old Ashok Sharma continues to enjoy a decent IPL 2026 campaign with the Gujarat Titans (GT) as a debutant. His six wickets so far combined with other impressive contributions has made GT one of the top sides this season, particularly during the group stages.

4. Kartik Sharma – Chennai Super Kings

1996-born Kartik Sharma is another player who was largely unknown among IPL fans before the 2026 season. The 20-year-old batting sensation has been a consistent performer in domestic T20 and List A cricket before venturing into IPL cricket.

Sharma lit up the CSK fan base immediately with impressive solo batting runs that now sees him register 290+ runs in 11 innings. His debut season has been above decent by batting standards, and fans expect his great run to continue in 2027 and beyond.

Sharma’s breakout moment came during the IPL group stages with an impressive 71 off 42 balls. His output included fourteen 6s and positioned him as a likely reliable solution to CSK’s middle-order batting problems.

Top Players Who Put in Stronger IPL 2025 Performances than in 2026

1. Nehal Wadhera – Punjab Kings

2000-born Nehal Wadhera began his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians and spent two seasons at that franchise before becoming a Punjab Kings (PBKS) player in 2025.

Wadhera fired on all cylinders during his first season at PBKS to register 369 runs in 15 innings. However, his output in 2026 remains stunted, as Nehal only has 65 runs in 6 innings at IPL 2026. Limited playing opportunities and drops in overall form are direct reasons why Wadhera’s contribution to PBKS’ campaign sharply dipped after an impressive start to life at his second IPL franchise.

2. Aniket Verma – Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batsman Aniket Verma delivered 236 runs in 14 matches at IPL 2025. His output last season dwarved the paltry 79 runs in 10 matches he has so far at IPL 2026. SRH fans hope Verma can deliver a better performance with the bat next season.

3. Priyansh Arya – Punjab Kings

Several analysts predicted that Priyansh Arya will be at the core of Orange Cap conversations at IPL 2026. Their leanings received support from Arya’s 475 runs in 17 innings at IPL 2025; however, the batter has not had much batting success this season. Arya has only 364 runs in 13 innings so far at IPL 2026 and doesn’t appear as dominant with the bat compared to last season.

4. Sameer Rizvi

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) snapped up Sameer Rizvi for $1 million at the IPL 2024 auction. Rizvi could not match the hype behind his price tag with 51 runs in 8 matches that season. His stint at Delhi Capitals since IPL 2025 also haven’t delivered results fans and analysts expect  from the 22-year-old batsman.
