T20 cricket fans are gearing up for another exciting season of Indian Premier League (IPL) action in 2026. The IPL 2026 auction now has a confirmed date range and other important schedules related to player trades ahead of the full season next year.
BCCI Considering Two Weeks in December for IPL 2026 Mini-Auction
Franchise officials held talks with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reps earlier this week. Details from these talks revealed that BCCI officials may schedule the auction between the second and third week in December.
Other information from the meeting suggests that all 10 franchises now focus on a mid-December auction to reel in talent for IPL 2026.
Will the IPL 2026 Auction Hold Overseas?
Previous IPL auctions have held in foreign countries recently. The IPL 2023 auction held in Dubai, UAE while its 2024 mega auction took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Sources within IPL franchises suggest that the next auction will be held in India. Holding three back-to-back IPL auctions overseas may not appeal to fans of cricket’s top franchise league.
Holding the IPL auction in India will provide several comforts franchises and fans can appreciate. For example, planning a mini-auction in India will not require significant input and logistical planning when the event is organised in India.
Hosting an IPL auction locally will also help the league stay connected to its major fanbase at home. Media networks in India will benefit from local auctions directly compared to when these events hold in overseas cities.
When is the Retention Deadline for Franchises Before IPL 2026 Auction?
The retention deadline is set for November 15, 2025. Franchises must hand in their list of retained players to relevant bodies on or before this date. The short period gives franchises under 5 weeks to finalise squad retentions before heading into player auctions.
When will the IPL 2026 Hold?
The 19th IPL will hold from March 14, 2026 to May 25, 2026 according to reports. Ten (10) franchise teams will compete against each other in the regular round-robin format. Every team within the format will face each other in two fixtures this season. Top teams after all round-robin games end will progress to a playoffs phase to challenge for the title.
How Many Matches Will Take Place at IPL 2026?
84 T20 matches will take place at some of the most-iconic cricket venues in India. Every team will get a chance to feature top opposition teams at their home stadium this season. Fans expect an exhilarating encounter in the all-new IPL season with so many exciting fixtures lined up.
Unconfirmed Reports Suggest Sweeping Changes at Some Franchises Before IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings
The five-time IPL champions finished rock bottom in one of their worst performances so far. Fans expect a clean sweep in several departments ahead of the next mega auction. However, limitations of the mini-auction in December may see some players stay on in CSK for another season.
Fans of the franchise expect older players to make way for younger talent as the franchise aims to rediscover its place among IPL’s top sides.
Rajasthan Royals
The Royals had several interesting moments to enjoy at IPL 2025, but these encounters did not translate to a much-coveted title. Former head coach Rahul Dravid exited the franchise after seeing out his tenure and failing to reel in a title. RR now have Kumar Sangakkara’s expertise to bank on as they target success in India’s top franchise league.
Sangakkara will likely require his set of players to take on opposing teams after an inspiring but unsuccessful 2025 season. Several key players could see their positions come under threat as the franchise targets a quick rebuild post-Dravid.
Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians have been on a rediscovery path for several seasons and are yet to find the spark that delivered five (5) IPL titles in their history. MI administrators could seek to make vital personnel changes as the franchise targets a sixth IPL title in under 2 decades.
Gujarat Titans
The Titans got off to a perfect IPL start with their debut season delivering a title in 2022. A finals appearance in 2023 and other impressive performances in the last two seasons give fans confidence that the current team can do more.
However, the loss of talented all-rounder Hardik Pandya and other players to opposing teams affected their recent campaigns for another title. Fans expect a significant investment from its franchise owners in coming auctions as they target another berth at the IPL’s summit.
