Veteran Chennai Super Kings (CSK) cricketer MS Dhoni has been the subject of continued fan gossip regarding his immediate future with the franchise. The cricketer appeared to share several hints about his desires to remain with CSK for several years after his retirement.
Fans expressed their satisfaction over Dhoni’s comments; however, the cricketer remains tight-lipped regarding how long his IPL career will be after last season.
“Me and CSK are together for next 15 to 20 years” – Dhoni reveals
Loud cheers greeted Dhoni’s comments when he confirmed he will stay at CSK for at least 2 more decades:
“Me and CSK – we are together. Even for the next 15–20 years,” Dhoni said and received a thunderous response from fans present at the event. However, it was clear that fans misunderstood Dhoni’s comments, and he clarified that he will be in the franchise long after retirement from active cricket:
“I hope they don’t think I’ll be playing for another 15–20 years,” a smiling Dhoni said.
“It’s not about 1 year or 2 years. I will always be seen in a yellow jersey. Whether I’ll be playing or not, you’ll know in a while. But yeah, you know it yourself,” the veteran added in an apparent attempt to tease fans.
What are Likely Reasons Behind Eventual Dhoni CSK Retirement?
Age
MS Dhoni is currently in his 40s and does not possess the same physical abilities he had about half-a-decade ago. The IPL has become more competitive than ever, and it may be difficult for aging players like Dhoni to perform at the top level for much longer.
CSK’s dismal IPL 2025 outing
CSK are five-time league champions but finished last in IPL 2025. Such a poor outing from the IPL’s joint most-decorated franchise means significant changes, and current signs suggest older players could be shown the exit door. It will not come as a surprise if Dhoni decides to take a non-playing role at the franchise ahead of IPL 2026.
Dhoni Relishes IPL Career Opportunity
MS Dhoni shared his elation regarding being one of the major players in IPL cricket. He expressed gratitude to IPL fans worldwide for their support over the years and he rated franchise cricket second to only national team call-ups:
“It’s a very good feeling, and I’ve always said it’s a big thank-you from the fans. That’s what I believe—for whatever years I keep playing, it’s their way of saying, ‘Thank you very much for everything you’ve done.’ And it’s amazing. “Especially when you play a sport, what you want is the appreciation of the fans. And when it comes to cricket, India is the place to play,” he said.
“Being part of the Indian cricket team is one of the biggest things. I’m not playing international cricket anymore, so IPL is the next best thing. I don’t get goosebumps, but it’s a special kind of feeling—every time you walk in, everyone’s excited. They’re waiting for you. They want you to do well,” Dhoni added during the interview.
