Delhi Capitals (DC) batting all-rounder Nitish Rana now has to pay a hefty fine after a disciplinary review found him contravening Indian Premier League (IPL) regulations. Fans and pundits expressed their surprise after receiving news of the fine, as Rana was not a part of DC’s playing XI during the game of interest.
Why Was Nitish Rana Fined IPL 2026?
Rana’s fine was not for an on-field infraction but for a verbal confrontation when DC faced the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The IPL governing council announced Rana’s penalty on April 11, 2026 and officially stated that the sanction was necessary because of his lack of professional decorum.
What Rule Did Rana Break?
An official IPL statement confirmed that Rana breached Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct. The article deals with audible obscenity during a match and clearly spells out penalties for contravening the rule.
Umpires during the DC vs CSK tie refused to allow Rana’s teammate Tristan Stubbs change his gloves at the late overs. Stubbs’ request for new gloves received support from his teammates at the dugout, including Rana.
Controversy brewed at the dugout area involving fourth umpire Anish Sahasrabudhe and Rana. Live footage captured Rana gesturing wildly at the fourth official. On-scene audio equipment also aired alleged obscene language from Rana against the umpire.
What is the Penalty Rana Has to Pay?
Going against Article 2.3 is a Level 1 offence and attracts a 25% match fee penalty. Rana also received a demerit point after this incident.
How Many Demerit Points Lead to Player Suspension?
IPL rules state that a player must accumulate a minimum of four demerit points within 2 years (24 months) before facing potential suspension.
Why Was Nitish Rana Not on the Field vs CSK?
Rana was on the bench due to a DC tactical change. Reports claim the batters underwhelming start to the IPL season may have been another reason behind his exclusion from this fixture. Analysts suggest that Rana going out of form this season was the sole factor DC’s management considered before putting him on the bench.
Rana’s first three games produced 15, 0, and 5 runs respectively. His 6.6 average is quite dismal for a batter at cricket’s top franchise league so far. Pressure on Rana continues to mount, and the latest controversy regarding being fined does not help his current situation.
