Is Hardik Pandya Going to Miss the Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings Clash?

Mumbai Indians (MI) IPL 2024 skipper Hardik Pandya is set to miss his team’s opening game next season. Pandya will be unavailable for MI’s opening IPL 2025 game vs fellow 5-time winners the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). MI will make the trip to Chepauk on March 23, 2025 without their star all-rounder as they aim for a record-breaking sixth title.

Why is Hardik Pandya Going to Miss the MI vs CSK IPL 2025 Clash?

Hardik Pandya will miss the team’s first match based on an IPL rule on slow over-rates. The IPL’s Code of Conduct mandates teams to meet a required over-rate or risk an automatic suspension of their captain.

“Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their IPL 2024 match against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 17,” an IPL statement read.

MI breached over-rate rules on three occasions and received the following penalties according to IPL regulations:

• ₹ 12 lakh fine for the captain – first offence
• ₹ 24 lakh fine for the captain while teammates will receive a 25% fine of their match fee or ₹ 6 lakh each – second offence
• ₹ 30 lakh fine for the captain and 1-match suspension while other teammates will receive a 50% fine of their match fee or ₹ 12 lakh each – third offence

“As it was his team’s third offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Pandya was fined Rs 30 lakh and banned from playing the team’s next match,” the statement concluded.

Who are the Top Candidates to Replace Hardik Pandya as MI Captain vs CSK?

Rohit Sharma

Sharma is MI’s best captain by some distance. The veteran led MI to each of their five IPL titles and has been a major force in the franchise’s success. Sharma is India’s skipper in 2 out of 3 international formats after retiring from his role as T20I captain in 2024.

Rohit is an ideal choice to hold this position until Pandya’s return; however, chances of his agreement to such an arrangement is unlikely. Sharma did not step down from his role as MI captain under the best circumstances. He may decline to take up the captain’s role and favour younger and talented candidates for the game vs CSK.

Jasprit Bumrah

Having the world’s best players in your ranks is a sure recipe for selection headache among MI coaching staff. Bumrah’s impressive wicket-taking haul in recent years has been a plus for MI and the Indian national team. MI may not select Bumrah for the captain’s role in their bid to reduce his workload in a busy cricket calendar.

Suryakumar Yadav

Yadav has been in unstoppable form as the captain of India’s T20I squad. The talented star has been a revelation of Yadav’s leadership abilities. His experience was on display in a recent T20I series vs England. Suryakumar led India to a 4–1 victory against the visitors to assert his team’s dominance in twenty-over internationals.

The cricketer’s aggressive gameplay skills coupled with a unique ability to inspire team players works in MI’s favour.

Tilak Varma

Young and talented star cricketer Tilak Varma is seen as one of MI’s untouchable players in their future projects. The youngster currently lacks captaincy experience at the highest level; however, an opportunity to lead MI’s first match in 2025 could be a gamechanger. Varma could garner valuable experience needed to become a strategic part of MI’s long-term plans.

Will Pandya Be Available for MI’s Return Leg vs CSK?

The second game in CSK vs MI IPL 2025 will see both sides lock horns at the Wankhede on April 20. Hardik Pandya should be available for that encounter in the business end of MI’s 2025 IPL campaign.
