The second T20 international (T20I) series between Pakistan and Australia took a controversial turn when Cameron Green faced Usman Tariq. Australian batsman Green took the bat against unorthodox spinner Usman Tariq in an attempt to give his team a fighting chance in the game.
Tariq dismissed Green effortlessly; however, the Australian did not exit play without expressing his displeasure. Green made a throwing motion as he left the field to suggest an illegal bowling action from Tariq during their encounter.
The gesture from Green has put Tariq’s bowling under the scanner as some analysts claim the Australian accused his opponent of unsportsmanlike conduct.
What Do ICC Regulations Say Regarding Illegal Bowling Action?
Current ICC regulations restrict bowlers within 15 degrees of elbow extensions between the point where the throwing arm assumes a horizontal stance and when the ball release happens.
Funded biomechanical research indicates that most bowlers exhibit some form of elbow extension during play.
Is This Tariq’s First Bowling-Related Controversy as a Professional?
Tariq’s bowling action has been under scrutiny at the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on at least one occasion. PSL umpires once flagged his bowling stance as illegal on several occasions. However, the PCB sanctioned biomechanical tests for Tariq at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Lahore.
Findings after these rests showed that Usman’s bowling action does not go against stated laws and informed his famous statement “My arm bends naturally. I have got this tested and cleared”.
Pakistan Shows Glimpses of Champions Mentality with T20 Series Whitewash vs Australia
The Green Shirts have a T20 WC trophy in their cabinet from a successful campaign in 2009; however, they continue to struggle in the format 17 years after lifting a maiden title. Fan excitement was at fever pitch during the 3-match series vs T20 powerhouses Australia.
The Men in Green rolled back the years with inspiring back-to-back victories against their visitors to hand Australia an embarrassing whitewash days before the next T20 World Cup.
