As the highly anticipated SA20 2025 is scheduled to take place from January 9 to February 8, the league is certain to miss out on one of the star cricketers. It is none other than England’s most important player Jos Buttler, who recently confirmed that he wouldn’t be competing in the next edition of the SA20 league.
Recently, Buttler shared a video on his social media account expressing his apologies for not being able to join the tournament due to his commitments to the national cricket team. Also, he was sidelined from the ongoing tournament “The Hundred”, which was indeed a huge blow for his team Manchester Originals.
The 33-year-old wicketkeeper batter said that he won’t be able to return to play for Paarl Royal and thanked the franchise for its support. As a result, the franchise had found the former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik as a replacement for Buttler.
Why Jos Buttler won’t play SA20 2025?
Jos Buttler takes this decision as the England Cricket Team will tour India during the same time frame of the SA20 2025. A busy schedule of 5-match T20I series from 25th January to 28th January and a 3-match ODI series from 6th February to 12th February clashes with the 3rd season of the SA20 fixtures.
After the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced their support for Buttler as the white-ball captain following the team’s recent disappointing performance, he had to prioritize his national duties.
Most importantly, the ODI series against India will be a preparatory phase for England to perform well in the Champions Trophy, which will take place in Pakistan in February 2025.
Why Jos Buttler is Ruled Out of The Hundred 2024?
Jos Buttler was supposed to lead the previous year’s runners-up Manchester Originals in “The Hundred 2024”, but a calf injury forced him to opt for a small break after England lost their title in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals against India. Currently, Philip Salt is leading Manchester Originals in Buttler’s absence.
Despite an injury, Buttler is expected to be seen back in action as a captain for the white-ball home series against Australia. It includes 3 T20Is and 5 ODIs that are scheduled between September 12 (Thursday) and September 29 (Sunday).
Jos Buttler Conveys Emotional Message to Paarl Royals fans
In a recent video shared on Instagram, Jos Buttler expressed his disappointment that he won’t be able to participate in SA20 2025:
“Hello everyone! This is an important message for all fans of Paarl Royals fans. Right now, I feel heartbroken for not coming back to the next edition of the SA20. The main reason is that there are few upcoming games in England and my focus will be completely shifted there. It’s a shame that I won’t be able to participate in the tournament for the next year.
You all know how much love I have for that league, especially for the Paarl Royals team and the fans as well. So, I convey my best wishes for the team in the tournament and hope to come back in the future seasons,” Buttler said.
Buttler’s Performance in SA20 2024
Jos Buttler delivered an outstanding performance in the previous season of SA20, as he was the 4th highest run-scorer in the tournament, with South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton ranking at the leading position in the list. He scored 408 runs in 11 innings, which includes three half-centuries at a batting average of 40.80 and a strike rate of 143.66 with his best unbeaten knock of 70 runs against Joburg Super Kings. He was the core batter for Paarl Royals and helped the team gain entry into the playoffs.
These are the scores of Jos Buttler in SA20 2024 against these teams:
- 14 runs from 16 balls (including 2 fours) vs Pretoria Capitals.
- 39 runs from 23 balls (including 5 fours and 1 six) vs Pretoria Capitals.

Dinesh Karthik Reactivates his Cricketing Career to Participate in SA20 2025: A Replacement for Jos Buttler
It has been two months since Dinesh Karthik (DK) announced his retirement from all formats of cricket, which includes the most anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL). Surprisingly, the 39-year-old ex-Indian cricketer reactivates his career in cricket by participating in SA20 2025 for Paarl Royals, replacing Jos Buttler. Moreover, this change marks a considerable transition in his retirement plans, and prepares to return to the competitive cricket tournaments.
Interestingly, Dinesh Karthik becomes the first Indian cricketer to make an appearance in the South African T20 League. By joining Paarl Royals, DK sets a new trend and opens the path for several Indian players to take part in the international T20 leagues.
Conclusion:
The absence of a core batsman like Jos Buttler will be certainly felt by the fans and the Paarl Royals team in the forthcoming season of the SA20 league. Although Dinesh Karthik has been brought in as a replacement, there is uncertainty if he could deliver an effective performance similar to Jos Buttler. However, the Paarl Royals will aim to enhance their success rate compared to the previous season and make an effort to win its maiden title in SA20 2025
