Smaran’s ‘Restless’ Start to Life in Domestic Cricket
Going in and out of favour is one of the hardest moments any professional cricketer can face. Smaran dealt with such an experience at a young age. Moving on from a surprise spot at the Cooch Behar Trophy to being left out of consecutive seasons was hard on Smaran as a budding cricket talent:
“For the past two years, I’ve been in the probables, it is disappointing as a cricketer because, ultimately, you want to represent Karnataka at the highest level and take it from there. You can only control the controllables,” the 21-year-old said.
Smaran acknowledges it was disappointing to stay out of competitive cricket for so long, but believes the time away from games gave him time to hone his batting skills:
“It is a disappointment, but accepting the fact that I’m not in the team has led to me improving my own game. That’s what I keep working on during the off-season, putting in the hard yards so that I come back strong with more runs.”
Smaran Speaks on Helping Karnataka Win the CK Nayudu Trophy
Karnataka didn’t have to struggle with securing runs as Smaran helped the side deliver 829 runs to bag the coveted CK Nayudu Trophy. Smaran credits his batting performance to staying positive and playing according to team needs after this title win:
“My mindset has always been to take on the bowling unit. There are different situations when you go out to bat. You have to assess the wickets, the bowlers and the situation of the team. I know that once settled I can take the bowling on. It is very easy to accelerate; the mindset has always been there to be positive and bat as per the team’s requirement,” he said.
Smaran led the title-winning team; however, he believes support from coaching staff was vital to their triumphant campaign:
“If you ask me personally, scoring 829 runs was harder because, as a captain, we had a wonderful bunch of players. Our coach and assistant coach guided me and made things very easy for me as a captain. Of course, decisions and other aspects get a little tricky, scoring those runs was the tougher part,” Smaran added.
How Does Smaran Prepare for Run-Scoring?
Smaran revealed the essence of two factors in developing into one of India’s top youngsters with the bat:
Importance of fitness in building his batting talent
The youngster takes advantage of loose balls with a strict fitness routine. He credits his dominant batting performance to being as fit as possible ahead of games:
“I capitalise on the loose balls and put them for a four or six. The fitness part is very important,” the skilled youngster said. A rigorous fitness regime has transformed the star batter into a top candidate for selection into professional cricket leagues in coming seasons.
Learning about patience from his long-time coach
Smaran said coach Syed Zabiullah is the major inspiration behind his recent successes after working together for over a decade:
“I’ve been with him [coach Syed], right from the beginning; he’s taught me a lot of things, not just in cricket but in life skills and how you keep yourself and conduct yourself outside cricket. I used to play some reckless shots and get out early. He’s taught me a lot about patience, it is always worth it in the end. He always told me that I would eventually understand the value of patience. That value has been really important for the way I bat,”
