Mithali Raj on India’s Strategy for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

Former cricketer Mithali Raj has some suggestions for the team ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The former Team India Women captain spoke after India’s shock loss at the Asia Cup 2024 final.

“They [Team India Women] are still searching for the right batter to go at number 3. They have tried Hemlata and they have tried Chetry. But ideally, they should have someone who can really go big after the sort of opening partnership that Shafali and Smriti would provide.” she said.

Mithali also talked about India women’s current bowling challenges and what they must do before the world cup:

“Also, the bowling aspect needs attention because right now they are going with only 5 bowlers. They probably require a 6th bowler, someone like an all-rounder who can bowl a few overs as well as bat. I think these are the areas India should look to tweak before getting into the T20 World Cup.”

The veteran female cricketer also sent words of encouragement to current team players ahead of their World Cup campaign in Bangladesh:

“My message to the Indian team would be to play good cricket, play hard cricket, and compete. I believe you all have a great chance because it’s in Bangladesh, a location with conditions that suit us. Our strengths have always been the spinners, and this time around our batting is also doing really well. So, good luck to you all.”

Harmanpreet Kaur Reacts after India Women’s Asia Cup Final Defeat

India lost their title charge for the Women’s Asia Cup final amid calls for changes in their strategy. The Women in Blue fell to a determined Sri Lankan Women’s side to lose their second final in nine attempts. Team skipper Harmanpreet Kaur had this to say about the development:

“We are looking to improve in some areas. We will definitely work hard and remember this day. They have played such good cricket for so long and they played good cricket throughout this tournament,”

“We played good cricket throughout the tournament and, no doubt, we made a lot of fumbles today and that cost us. It was a decent total, we were looking for breakthroughs in the powerplay but it didn’t go according to plan and Sri Lanka batted really well,”

India Women will face the Sri Lanka Women on October 9, 2024 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Bangladesh. The group game will give Harmanpreet and her charges a golden opportunity to make up for their Asia Cup loss.
