Mohsin Naqvi is currently serving as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) after assuming the position on April 3, 2025. He secured the role after Pakistan took over the ACC presidency from Sri Lanka Cricket. His appointment is for a two-year term and will end on April 3, 2027.
Let’s see when Mohsin Naqvi’s ACC presidency will end and what is known about the leadership changes ahead.
His Current Term Won’t Exceed the First Week of April 2027
Naqvi was appointed for a two-year term and his tenure will end no later than April 3, 2027 after being at the helm of several regional competitions as the regional cricket board’s chair.
ACC Presidency Follows a Rotation System
The ACC presidency usually a rotation system among eligible Full Member boards. The rotation had involved India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh before Afghanistan was added to the arrangement in 2026.
The ACC’s 2026 Annual General Meeting in Bangkok approved the inclusion of the Afghanistan Cricket Board in the group of Full Member boards eligible to assume the presidency. The change expanded the rotation to five Full Member boards.
Naqvi Has Already Overseen Major ACC Events
During his tenure, Naqvi has been involved in preparations and announcements surrounding major ACC competitions. In July 2025, he confirmed that the men’s Asia Cup would be staged in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28, with the tournament returning to the T20 format.
He also chaired the ACC’s 2025 Annual General Meeting in Dhaka, where the council approved its tournament calendar and discussed development-related matters across its membership. The meeting included representatives from all ACC member countries.
2026 AGM Changed the Leadership Framework
The ACC’s 2026 AGM in Bangkok was another important point in Naqvi’s presidency. Khalid Al Zarooni of the UAE was unanimously elected ACC vice-president during this annual meeting.
Afghanistan’s inclusion is particularly relevant because it adds another Full Member board to the group eligible to lead the continental body. Several sports analysts believe the next ACC chair could lead the next cycle ending in 2029.
India and Naqvi Have Had Trophy Presentation Disputes
The question of Naqvi’s tenure continues to receive attention following two consecutive Asia Cup trophy-presentation disputes involving India.
India defeated Pakistan but did not receive the trophy from Naqvi during the presentation during the 2025 Men’s Asia Cup final. The ACC retained this trophy after India’s refusal at the ceremony.
A similar situation occurred after the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup final. India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in Dubai to win the title, but the Indian team did not accept the trophy from Naqvi. The presentation was delayed, and Naqvi presented the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka before leaving the venue.
Naqvi Remains ACC President for Now
Mohsin Naqvi is still ACC President; however, his tenure could end before the next Asia Cups hold. Representatives from cricket boards across member nations also make up the major structure of Asia’s cricket governing body.
Discussions about the end of Naqvi’s tenure are just fan conversations for now. The next ACC presidential cycle will not become active until April 2027. One or more official statements from the ACC will announce Naqvi’s exit after his tenure expires.
Who Could Take Over After Naqvi?
Recent reports have suggested that Afghanistan could be next in line but that remains reporting rather than an official ACC appointment. This speculation seems to gain traction since the country’s cricket board is now eligible to participate in the rotation.
Naqvi’s Other Cricket Role
Naqvi’s ACC presidency is held alongside his position as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He has been the PCB chairman since February 2024 when he took charge of the continental body.
He also holds a government position in Pakistan as head of the country’s interior ministry. However, his ACC term is governed by the cricket council’s own leadership arrangements. The scheduled conclusion of his ACC presidency may not coincide with his exits from other roles in Pakistan’s sport or government.
