Ever since the first One Day International (ODI) match was played on January 05, 1971, only seven teams have been able to accumulate 400+ totals to date (as of August 24, 2025).
In the early days, ODIs comprised 40 to 60 overs per inning, but later went on to become a 50-over contest since the mid-1990s.

Conclusion
A decade ago, a total between 250 and 300 was considered to be match-winning and highly challenging to chase in ODIs.
However, in the modern era, compiling 300+ total in a 50-over format has become a cakewalk. This is because the current generation batters have been following an aggressive style of playing cricket where they execute unorthodox and power-hitting shots fearlessly to score huge runs through boundaries. Attaining the milestone of 400+ total highlights the team’s in-depth batting line-up and the mindset of the batters to take calculated risks and accelerate their scoring rate
