MS Dhoni future as a player at CSK could depend on retentions

Many Chennai Super Kings (CSK) await news of MS Dhoni’s future with much anticipation. Recent reports suggest that the veteran’s future as an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricketer depends on set retention rules.

The IPL is set to begin preparations for its 18th edition with a crucial meeting involving franchise owners and cricket authorities. Franchise owners are set to meet with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL officials on July 31, 2024. A major topic for discussion at this event will be the maximum number of retentions allowed. Limited retentions could see the decorated MS Dhoni bow out of IPL cricket before 2025.

What Other Points are Up for Discussion at the BCCI – IPL Franchise Owners’ Meeting?

The meeting on schedule will reportedly entertain discussions on the Right-to-Match (RTM) option. Franchises can retain the services of key players at auction with the RTM card. Any vital squad member bid from another franchise could be damaging to a team’s season without this option.

It gives teams the right to meet price tags of their key cricketers at auction to prevent trading these players to rival franchises. IPL franchises usually get a defined number of outright retentions along with one RTM card every auction season.

Another point likely on schedule for discussion at the meeting will be salary caps for players. Capping salaries for players continues to encourage talks among franchises and the BCCI every off-season. Increasing the salary cap for players can allow participating teams retain their star cricketers with bumper pay.

Other discussions may also dwell on increasing the minimum salary cap for franchise players.

Where is the Meeting Scheduled to Hold?

A report stated that the meeting will likely hold at the Wankhede Stadium complex, Mumbai:

“While the exact venue has not been confirmed, the congregation is expected to take place at the Cricket Centre, the BCCI headquarters, located within the Wankhede Stadium complex in Mumbai,” the report said.

Is MS Dhoni Ready to Play at IPL 2025?

There are reports suggesting MS Dhoni’s readiness to play at the IPL 2025. However, his participation reportedly depends on how many retentions IPL franchise owners and the BCCI agree on in their meeting. Sources suggest that Dhoni will continue as a CSK player if participating franchises can secure 5 or 6 retentions from the BCCI meeting.

More retentions will create room for Dhoni in the squad as CSK looks to bounce back in 2025 after a dismal campaign last season.

Will CSK Release MS Dhoni before IPL 2025?

Chances of CSK releasing Dhoni before IPL 2025 are rather slim. He is their most-decorated player of all time and doubles as the franchise’s most successful captain. Dhoni’s willingness to feature in IPL 2025 should be enough for him to earn a chance in the Chennai IPL franchise once again.

Will Another Franchise Get Dhoni if He Leaves CSK?

MS Dhoni will have no shortage of potential contracts if he eventually leaves CSK. The veteran cricketer will be on the radar of several top IPL franchises if his current franchise cannot retain his services. Franchises like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) could be likely destinations.

However, there’s another chance that Dhoni could retire if he doesn’t get to continue at the Chennai-based franchise.

Likely Players CSK Will Retain for IPL 2025

The Super Kings are likely to retain the services of Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad (IPL 2024 CSK captain). Other players with a high chance of being in the CSK retention pool are Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana.

Is This the First Time MS Dhoni’s IPL Future is Uncertain?

Dhoni’s IPL future has been on the balance for several seasons. However, speculation over his future in the IPL continues to grow in recent years based on his age. The 43-year-old Dhoni shows no signs of throwing in the towel after an illustrious career spanning over a decade.

Fans were left in suspense after the IPL 2023 final when it seemed Dhoni was set to retire. The veteran dismissed rumours of his retirement by going on another competitive run with CSK in IPL 2024.

How Many IPL Titles Has MS Dhoni Won So Far?

MS Dhoni has been at the helm of five (5) IPL titles for CSK since his professional career in India’s premier cricket competition. The veteran’s most recent CSK IPL title came in 2023, where his team saw off a Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT).

A tight encounter was not enough to stop Dhoni’s charges, as he secured yet another IPL championship with the Chennai-based franchise. His current IPL situation will get a solution in coming weeks and allow fans determine where Dhoni will play next season.
