New Zealand all-rounder Nathan Smith recently shed light on the nature of his relationship with women’s captain Melie Kerr. Both New Zealand nationals are contributing to the country’s rising profile as a top cricket side globally, and share a somewhat busy schedule as active international players.
Smith shared details about his relationship with the New Zealand Women’s captain during a recent interview.
Smith Speaks on His Relationship with Kerr
Nathan spoke on how he deals with his busy schedule as a cricket international and being a partner to an equally-busy women’s captain:
“You’re just taking it in your stride at the moment,” Nathan said during the interview. “Once you’re in it, you’re not trying to make it something bigger than it is: she’s been to a handful of World Cups, and I’ve played a bit of international cricket now. You’re just bringing it back to a day-by-day, game-by-game sort of thing. But yeah, it is a massive time in our lives,” the cricketer added.
“Time Together is Never Normally at Home” – Smith Admits
The Black Caps bowler also spoke on how he and his partner have to deal with meeting at locations far from home based on their usually packed schedules:
“That’s the other thing: your time together is never normally at home. Other players go home and have their families there, and their time off is at home. For us, it’s a little bit different. It’s like time off just wherever: hotel rooms, normally. But it’s all good… It’s nice to be in the same time zone, at least,” he revealed.

Smith Sheds Light on Struggles with Partnership as International Cricketers
Nathan spoke on how being on the fringes of New Zealand international cricket for months led to a strain in his relationship. However, he cites understanding as the major reason behind sustaining his bond with Kerr:
“For my first year to 18 months of international cricket, I was on the fringe, in and out,” the cricketer said. “Every training session felt like a game to me… It took a lot out of me mentally, and I probably wasn’t the best partner to be around. But the understanding is there: she definitely understands how hard it can be,” he revealed.
The cricketer jokingly added how he spoke to Kerr after she was dropped briefly from NZ-W’s international setup:
“I was like, ‘Welcome to the club, you’ve never been dropped in your life and now you know it doesn’t feel good,'” Smith said while in a cheerful mood. “I definitely think it helps when you have tough days… But she obviously has a lot of good days, and I’m normally cheering her on,” he continued.
