Why Pakistan Army is training the national cricket team?

The Pakistan Army aims to prepare the national cricket team for a challenging task ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 hosted by the West Indies and the USA. Mainly, the Pakistan cricketers were put through a most difficult training session after complaints were raised about the team’s poor fitness and performance in the ODI World Cup 2023. Also, the camp aims to train Pakistan players to face New Zealand in the 5-match T20I home series that starts on 18th April 2024.

Additionally, Pakistan will be participating in back-to-back T20I series before the T20 World Cup such as:

  • Pakistan Tour of Ireland 2024 (3-Match T20I series): 10th May to 14th May.
  • Pakistan Tour of England 2024 ( 4-Match T20I series): 22nd May to 30th May.

Mohsin Naqvi— the PCB Chairman, expressed his appreciation to the Pakistan Army for collaborating with the national cricket team, highlighting the advantages of improving the fitness and discipline of the Pakistani cricketers.

Who Instructed the Pakistan Cricket Team to undergo Army training?

Indeed, it was Mohsin Naqvi who encouraged the Pakistan cricketers to train with the army in March and April. The PCB Chief approached a few players at a hotel in Islamabad on 5th March 2024 (Tuesday). A detailed discussion was held about the 10-day training session during the 9th edition of the Pakistan Super League 2024 (PSL)

During the meeting with the players, Naqvi voiced his opinion that he was dissatisfied with the six-hitting abilities of Pakistan’s batsmen and advised them to focus on strength and consistent form.

Furthermore, Mohsin Naqvi feels that the players should concentrate on playing for the Pakistan cricket team and give importance to national commitments over other leagues and personal lives as well.

Debates about Pakistan Cricket Team’s Army Training

Social media blazed with videos highlighting the cricketers undergoing strict army-style training and questioned the kind of mission the Pakistan Cricket Team is preparing for. Several cricket fans pointed out that these kinds of risky training can cause injury to players if they slip on such rocky areas.

Even the Pakistan media went scratching their heads at how such weird training for the players could improve their cricketing skills.

For instance, fans trolled the image of Fakhar Zaman holding a gun and aiming for a shoot by raising uncertainties that how the training would help him to gain fitness and score runs.

A few fans, however, supported the innovative training strategies that could build the physical and mental strength of players, steadiness, and team bonding. At the same time, some experts predict that if the PCB continuously focuses on providing such strange training, it could leave the team unprepared to face technical and strategic challenges on-field.

Conclusion:

Pakistan cricket team is always popular and remains in the headlines for strange reasons and controversies. Previously, there used to be a conflict either between the captain and players or among the board members. This time, they have been severely trolled by the fans after their training session videos became viral on several social media platforms.

Moreover, the group-stage clash between the arch-rivals India and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup on 9th June 2024 adds an extra layer of anticipation to the prestigious tournament, thereby pressuring the PCB to opt for unusual preparatory sessions.  Finally, the true result of the unique coaching approach will be witnessed in the forthcoming performances of the Pakistan Cricket Team. It remains to be seen if these cricketers succeed in validating the unorthodox workout methods or lead to the re-evaluation of these practices if the results remain unimpressive
