On 6th August 2024 (Monday), the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi came under the spotlight. He became furious when a journalist questioned him about his cricket knowledge. The 45-year-old businessman-turned-politician and the present federal minister for interior, responded aggressively to the critics pointing out his commitment to deliver outstanding results.
He voiced his frustration declaring that his cricketing knowledge was to ensure the best outcome for the PCB.
Ever since Mohsin started his job as PCB chief, he has been facing a lot of criticism as he is in charge of numerous departments. Previously Naqvi had worked as the caretaker chief minister of Punjab Province before the recent general elections. Notably, Naqvi appointed the ex-legendary Pakistani seamer Waqar Younis to manage the cricketing activities, thereby restricting himself only to the administrative role.
PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi Slams the Journalist
In a recent media conference in Lahore, Naqvi lost his temperament and lashed out at a journalist who doubted his knowledge of the sport:
“Wait! All I want to convey is that time will reveal how much I know about cricket. We are here to deliver the best results. I am not concerned about what people have to say, but you will soon observe the outcome. Also, I am inviting the former star players to supervise and improve the system in cricket and conclude the tradition of individual likes and dislikes. We will introduce this new domestic structure into the legal system so that in future it wouldn’t be possible to implement any changes,” Mohsin said.
The PCB chief wanted to convey his plans of improving Pakistan cricket starting from the basement levels. Recently, the PCB inaugurated three new tournaments to expand its domestic structure of playing cricket. Moreover, the board made a remarkable decision by increasing the pay scale of its domestic players.
Mohsin Naqvi Sets Up a New Domestic Structure to Improve Pakistan Cricket
Naqvi revealed that the latest domestic system will be made available from the next month onwards. The tournament features five teams that consist of 30 players each. These teams will compete in various championships of different formats such as the first-class, 50-over, and T20 matches.
“Yeah! Every team will be headed by a well-known former stalwart and will be provided three years to manage and obtain the best outcome,” Naqvi conveyed his final thoughts.
Furthermore, Naqvi declared that he would be setting up a new advisory board, which would be led by Waqar Younis.
Regarding the working of the new system, Waqar Younis said that he liked the idea and agreed with it. The former Pakistani bowler mentioned that the money and resources would be invested to improve domestic cricket:
“Certainly! There would be a support staff of 10 members for each team which includes the coaches as well. We will recruit five legendary cricketers to lead the team, and I am already in contact with a few of them. Cricket is our product and will remain always. To maintain our brand, we have to give our best efforts by playing good cricket. Everything else comes later”, Waqar Younis concluded.
Earlier, the PCB confirmed that an overall 261 domestic matches would be conducted in the men’s senior tournaments across all formats. This includes first-class cricket (131 matches), 50-over contests (40 matches), and T20 events (90 matches) in the upcoming season from September 2024 to August 2025.
Conclusion:
Mohsin Naqvi’s response and plans indicate a clear strategy to enhance the development of Pakistan cricket and aims for long-term victory and solidity. It becomes clear that Naqvi has taken this criticism seriously and gives a counterattacking response to the critics. He is confident about bringing huge changes in Pakistan cricket and challenges the journalists to wait for a perfect time to get the best result.
Naqvi’s change in position from politics to cricket management has been viewed with suspicion with many left questioned about his knowledge of the game.
Similar to the BCCI, the PCB said that the contracted players will have to appear for these events as well. Also, Naqvi confirmed that the five ex-cricketers will be part of the cricket advisory board managed by Waqar Younis.
However, the future of Pakistan cricket seems promising under Naqvi’s guidance with several key initiatives already in action.
While there are huge challenges and uncertainties about Pakistan’s cricketing standards, Mohsin Naqvi’s efforts highlight his potential to bring out huge improvements. In recent times, the Pakistan national cricket team has been facing severe failures. Overall it remains to be seen how Mohsin Naqvi will bring out tremendous changes by implementing his knowledge in domestic cricket to pick out the best young talented players for the national side and give a perfect response to critics
