Players eyeing India call-up via Duleep Trophy 2024

The Duleep Trophy 2024 will be on from September 5 to September 28, 2024. Several players are targeting great performances at the competition to lay claim to a national team place. Many cricketers see the Duleep Trophy 2024 as an opportunity to catch the eye of national team selectors.

Let’s explore some of the top players eyeing a Team India call-up through the Duleep Trophy 2024.

Arshdeep Singh

India’s leading wicket-taker at the T20 World Cup 2024 hopes to play more team roles in longer formats. He is a top bowler in India’s current setup, but lacks experience in longer formats. Just 9 Ranji Trophy appearances since 2019 and short stints at Kent (County Championship) and India A Test team are not enough.

Singh would hope to earn more Test experience via the Duleep Trophy 2024. More experience and great performances would lead to increased national team participation for the star bowler.

Rajat Patidar

Consistent performances in domestic cricket for Madhya Pradesh earned Patidar a call-up vs England in Visakhapatnam. The cricketer experienced some difficulties retaining wickets in later innings, but he had a strong performance overall.

He has a keen eye for runs and would hope to improve on his earlier performances in red-ball cricket. Patidar once finished as the second-highest getter of runs (658 @ 82.25 in 9 innings). The cricketer would hope to earn more national team call-ups through his Duleep Trophy 2024 performances.

Shreyas Iyer

Iyer has always showed talent in his role for India across formats. His 2021 Test Century vs the Black Caps showed his impressive skillset as a team player. Shreyas has been a long-term choice for Team India in the middle-order, but injuries have hampered his selection chances lately.

Shreyas Iyer has had to deal with a series of back injuries in recent years, keeping him in and out of the national team. However, his stable performances for the Kolkata Knight Riders shows his readiness for a permanent national team place.

Washington Sundar

Sundar has not been consistent in the international setup since his Test debut few years ago. The cricketer has also not had steady First-Class outings since 2021. However, Sundar still has the goods as evident in a recent call-up vs Australia in Brisbane. The cricketer smashed home impressive 84 runs combined as India went on to record a historic win.

Washington may not have a stable position in the squad, but his recent performances signal undeniable quality.

Avesh Khan

The Ranji Trophy 22/23 gave Avesh Khan every tool required to lay claim to a national team call-up. 28 wickets at 20.13 along with other impressive numbers at state level have been beneficial to Khan’s claim. The pace bowler also ranks highly among Madhya Pradesh highest wicket-takers in domestic events like the Ranji Trophy 22/23.

His stellar performances at domestic level coupled with a replacement call-up brought Khan to the national team setup. He was called as a replacement for the rested Mohammed Shami as India faced South Africa in a 2023 Test series. A five-wicket turnover against the Proteas and other impressive outings sees Khan aiming for another international call-up.
