PSL 2024: Players Receive 70% Payment, To Receive rest At The End

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on 24th February 2024 (Saturday) revealed a shocking update about the PSL 2024 payment. In the ongoing ninth edition of the league, the PCB confirmed that the participating players received 70% of their salary. It means that the remaining 30% will be awarded once the tournament is completed on 18th March 2024 (Monday).

These Six different team captains aim to win the defending champions’ title of the continuing PSL 2024 season namely:

  1. Mohammad Rizwan: Multan Sultans
  2. Shaheen Shah Afridi: Lahore Qalanders
  3. Shan Masood: Karachi Kings
  4. Rilee Rossouw: Quetta Gladiators
  5. Babar Azam: Peshawar Zalmi
  6. Shadab Khan: Islamabad United

The curtain raiser of the PSL 2024 had an entertaining contest between the 2-times defending champions Lahore Qalanders and Islamabad United on 17th February 2024 (Saturday) at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

To date, both the domestic and overseas cricketers have shown their exceptional performance. However, after the completion of a successful first week, the news has come that players haven’t received their entire PSL 2024 payment.

Moreover, the salary issue isn’t a new concept between the players and the PSL tournament. During the previous two seasons, the rumours were speculated on social media that players didn’t receive the money they were supposed to get on time. Additionally, the players who were under the contract with the PCB haven’t been paid any salaries in the past six months.

Pakistan Cricket Board Clarifies about the PSL 2024 payment

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board agreement, the players, and the franchise league have agreed upon the conditions of PSL 2024  payment.

Currently, the league is paying a daily stipend of $50. In other words, each player receives up to 14,000 PKR  (INR 4,157) per day for participating in the one-month contest of PSL 2024.

Based on the team’s decisions in the playoffs stage, the management will make the payment thereafter.

Also, the franchise owners are conditionally made to sit in the dugout. Neither are they allowed to go anywhere outside during the match, nor they can use smartphones, smartwatches or any other communication devices during their presence in the dugout. Meanwhile, the management has designated a separate area for owners without requiring any prior permissions.

However, the team owners must inform the organizers in advance. Once the owners leave the ground, they cannot return. After the match, the players and owners can meet each other that too only in the dressing room.

PSL 2024 Payment: Financial Issues of the Pakistan Cricket Board

Previously, the Pakistan Auditor General’s office showed that the PCB was suffering losses in millions of rupees (PKR) from the Pakistan Super League. It was due to the financial sharing arrangement with the six franchises owing to many irregularities. The audit reports stated that the PCB underwent a significant loss of 1,637,977 million rupees. It was because of the increasing numbers of PSL franchises in terms of share. 

Additionally, the Auditor General’s report proved that PCB losses began from the 5th edition of PSL. Particularly, when franchises’ share in media rights experienced an increase to 80%, thereby keeping just 20% for the board. Consequently, the PCB had to miss out on a huge revenue of 810 million PKR.

Conclusive Facts about the PSL 2024 payment

The delay in payment creates financial strain and raises questions about the lack of funds that the PCB may be facing currently to fulfil the contract commitments. As a result, players’ focus cannot focus completely during the tournament. Also, fans lose trust and enthusiasm which can impact the engagement rate in the long run.

The financial mismanagement can tamper the league’s reputation which jeopardizes sponsorships and future investment.

For instance, the PCB earlier banned James Faulkner for leaving the PSL 2022 tournament mid-way following the same payment issue. The issue grabbed the media’s attention by highlighting the seriousness of the issue. Furthermore, it was the starting point of the league’s damaging reputation

Unfortunately, the Pakistan Cricket Board has been facing back-to-back humiliations in recent times. Mainly, the PSL 2024 LIVE Broadcast succumbed to an outage during the 4th over of the match between Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings. As a result, the live stream went offline for 15 minutes in India, Pakistan, England, UAE and various countries.

It proves that the league’s reputation is at stake. Many cricket fans and experts suggested that the management has to implement a proactive approach to address the issues as well as maintain the integrity and professionalism of the franchise league.

The PSL 2024 payment issues remain a heated debate and scrutiny as the tournament progresses. Despite the stakeholders keenly monitoring the developments and prompting for the timely resolution of this issue.

Furthermore, the Pakistan cricket team is in a state of confusion because of the uncertainty in leadership and cannot afford additional controversies at the moment.

Finally, it remains to be seen if the remaining 30% payment will be paid out without any further complications.
