PSL to clash with IPL next year as PCB identifies April-May window

The 9th edition of the ICC Champions Trophy hosted by Pakistan in 2025 resulted in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) clash with the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the next season. Also, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has chosen a window between 7th April to 20th May for hosting the 10th season of the PSL, the dates during which the 18th season of the IPL might be played.

Moreover, it is the first time in the history of franchise league cricket that PSL and IPL will face off with each other. In contrast, this year’s PSL finals were held on 18th March, which is four days before the IPL tournament started (22nd March).

Ever since the first edition of the PSL in 2016, the tournament has been tentatively set to take place in February and March.

On 4th May 2024 (Saturday), PCB held a meeting with six franchise owners of the PSL to discuss the slot for PSL 10 and Salman Naseer shared some interesting facts about his plans.

PCB meeting with franchise owners of PSL

The recent meeting between the PCB and six franchise owners of the PSL ensured to plan for the most efficient preparation and organize domestic and international cricket matches in the best possible way based on their below statement:

“This is a fact you need to observe. After several years, there is a chance to expect a clash between these two franchise league tournaments. Especially, the schedule in 2025 will affect the participation of overseas players in both PSL and IPL for the first time.

Since the ICC Champions Trophy is hosted in the traditional event window for 2025, the tournament will be held between 7th April to 20th May. The PSL 2025 matches will be hosted at four different places in Pakistan namely Karachi, Multan, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, ensuring that each team gets an opportunity to play at least five matches on their home ground.

Also, it is planned that four matches in the playoff stages are planned to be conducted at a neutral venue and the PCB is continuing to explore additional venues”, PCB announced during a release on Saturday.

Salman Naseer about the meeting with PSL Franchise Owners

The PCB Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer reveals how the meeting progressed with the PSL franchise owners and the decisions to be made at the General Council meeting:

“As usual, the meeting was held smoothly. We had many intriguing and imaginative sessions with the franchise owners on the window of PSL 2025. Mainly, the franchise owners offered their all-around insights and perspectives on the PCB suggested window and venues for the upcoming grand tournament’s playoffs in 2025.

After this meeting, the board will inform the owners regarding the perfect time to hold the Pakistan Super League in 2025. As a result, the franchise owners will have better discussions among themselves to make smarter decisions, which helps them to share their ideas and thoughts at the General Council meeting”

We are excited to work with the franchise owners to make proper decisions about the growth of Pakistan’s biggest league”, said Salman Naseer

PSL 2025 vs IPL 2025: Conclusive Facts

Overall, the PCB is aiming for a huge shift in the timeline of the PSL from its regular February slot to May in the forthcoming edition. This is because, after a long gap of  8 years, the ICC Champions Trophy makes a comeback, adding a special layer of action-packed entertainment to the cricketing calendar in 2025.

Based on the latest reports, the 9th edition of the PSL had a viewership count of 350 million approximately and 1.5 billion on digital platforms. Also, there was a 45% increase in selling media rights compared to the previous cycle. Whereas for international media rights, there was a 41% increase, thereby marking an overall spike of 113%.

According to the latest sources, there was a meeting between PCB and Wasim Khan, the General Manager of ICC. The session included a discussion about the scheduling of the Champions Trophy with a special focus on Team India’s matches. Furthermore, the PCB draft schedule states that the Indian cricket team will play all its matches in Lahore. The main intention of organizing India’s matches at the same venue is to overcome the security and logistical challenges with ease.

Team India travelled to Pakistan in 2008 for the last time to participate in the 9th edition of the Asia Cup. The political and territorial enmities over the past few years resulted in no bilateral series between India and Pakistan since 2012.

Finally, there comes a question about which of these two will the overseas players prefer— Pakistan Super League (PSL) vs Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025? Certainly, it is the Indian Premier League in which a majority of foreign cricketers will prefer to participate due to its immense popularity and the opportunities to earn huge cash within a limited time limit.
