Afghanistan cricket maestro Rashid Khan recently caused a stir after comments made in his latest book gained attention. The bowling all-rounder claimed he received citizenship offers from India and Australia to aid his allegiance switch to represent cricket teams of either country.
Khan made this claim in his book Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom that officials from both countries approached him to represent them in international cricket:
“I received such offers (for citizenship and international cricket) from both Australia and India. But I told them, ‘If I don’t play for my country, I won’t play for any other country either,” the Afghan international said.
Why Did Rashid Khan Reject Citizenship Offers?
The bowling all-rounder claims he rejected both offers of citizenship and a potential place in national cricket due to national pride. Khan says he felt a sense of fulfilment playing for Afghanistan he wouldn’t have had elsewhere.
The-then Afghan president Ashraf Ghani reportedly knew about offers for citizenship from foreign countries attempting to pry the talented all-rounder from his country of origin.
Khan Narrates How He Received Citizenship Offer from India
Rashid went into details in his book while claiming a high-ranking official from India brought the offer to him directly:
“I went over and greeted him. We started talking, and he said: ‘The situation in your country (Afghanistan) is very bad. Come stay in India. We will give you Indian documents, live here, play cricket here.’ I was surprised by what he was saying and didn’t know how to respond. But I smiled and said, ‘Thank you very much. I am playing for my country, Afghanistan,’” Khan narrated in a section of his title.
Why Were Full Member Cricket Nations Attempting to Secure Khan’s Allegiance Switch
Rashid hails from the war-plagued Nangarhar region of Afghanistan. The cricketer’s home country continues to experience security instability two decades after a US-led military force arrived in Afghanistan.
Cricket nations Khan claims at the time were interested in handing him citizenship to abandon Afghanistan for the relative safety on offer. Access to state-of-the-art infrastructure could have been another major part of the offer, but Khan expressly refused according to details in his book.
