RR Phone Saga: Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Faced No Penalty

Rajasthan Royals (RR) manager Romi Bhinder is at the centre of an ongoing controversy resulting from his conduct at his team’s dugout. Live footage and post-match clips captured Bhinder using what appeared to be a mobile phone during RR’s IPL 2026 group game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

RR teen batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi sat beside Bhinder when the manager was visibly distracted by his mobile device. The young RR batter also showed clear interest in whatever Bhinder was busy with on the phone. However, emerging reports suggest that Sooryavanshi received full clearance from potential action after this incident gained media attention.

Why Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Walk Free After RR Phone Incident?

Sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) claim that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will not face any disciplinary action since he may not be familiar with rules of this league:

“There was no discussion about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He is a kid and maybe the franchise can explain the rules better to him. No point intimidating a youngster,” a BCCI insider said.

IPL Statement Confirms Details of Incident Involving Suryavanshi and Bhinder?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) released an official statement confirming events surrounding an ongoing controversy involving RR team manager Romi Bhinder and youngster batter Sooryavanshi:

Why is the BCCI Against Using Phones in Dugouts During Games?

The BCCI restricts usage of phones and other electronic devices in IPL dugouts to curb potential events of match-fixing. Such measures also aim to prevent spot-fixing and other forms of illegal betting practices in the league.

Restricting communication among players and support staff to on-pitch level ensures no contact with external entities like bookmakers. Cutting off communication links minimises risks of individuals passing on real-time and sensitive details like tactical decisions or pitch conditions to bookmakers.

Does the BCCI Restrict Media from Sharing IPL Match Details?

Media restrictions exist during IPL matches to protect the integrity of this competition. Regulations prevent media houses from sharing live ball-wise updates with their audience. Text commentary is available on several of these channels; however, with latency time restrictions.

“We noticed photographs of him using a mobile phone in the dugout. On April 12, the ACU issued him a notice under Article 4.1.1 of the BCCI PMOA protocols, asking for a reply within 48 hours. While he responded within the stipulated time, we were not satisfied with his explanation,” the board’s secretary said.

“Since this is a first-time offence, a fine of Rs 1 lakh has been imposed under clause 7.42 (a), along with a warning to strictly adhere to the protocols going forward,” Saikia added.
