Should Team India Travel to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy?

The ICC’s desire to bring back Champions Trophy cricket in 2025 pits India against Pakistan once again. Pakistan is on schedule to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The tournament will see several international teams converge for another 50-over spectacle. However, reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not keen on sending players to Pakistan.

Should Team India Travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy?

Team India’s travel plans are of great importance to local and international cricket plans. The final decision to visit or avoid Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 rests with India’s government.

Is This the First Time India Will Refuse Travel to Pakistan?

The BCCI and India’s cricket team by extension have refused travel proposals to Pakistan for at least a decade. India and Pakistan last had normal sporting relations in cricket before 2009. Heightened political tensions has seen Pakistan grapple with hosting India for several years running. Both teams only clash in ICC and ACC organized events.

Did Pakistan Visit India for the ODI World Cup 2023?

Yes, Pakistan played several games in India at the ODI World Cup 2023. The Men in Green failed to make an impact at the 50-over tournament, but they appeared for all scheduled matches in Indian soil.

Why is India So Valuable in International Cricket?

India has one of the sport’s biggest fanbases and provide a major source of revenue to regional and international governing bodies. Such an advantage gives the BCCI bargaining chips to push for their interests in situations like the Champions Trophy travel saga.

Which Body is Behind India’s Refusal to Visit Pakistan?

India’s refusal to visit Pakistan for any regional or international cricket event is a government decision. The country’s central government views any security risk on its citizens as a national issue. BCCI officials have disclosed in the past that they rely on the government’s say-so before traveling to nations like Pakistan. BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla had this to say about India’s government involvement in their refusal to visit their neighbours for cricket:

“In the case of the Champion Trophy, we will do whatever the Government of India will tell us to do. We send our team only when the Government of India permits us to do so. So we will go according to the decision of the Indian government.” the BCCI executive said.

The BCCI has not had any such approvals since the 2010s for games involving Pakistan, limiting cricket games between both teams.

PCB Threatens BCCI

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reportedly doesn’t wish to hold the ICC Champions Trophy outside Pakistani soil. It is the apparent wish of the PCB for Team India to visit Pakistan for the tournament within February and March 2025.

Inside sources at the PCB also claim the governing body will not send players to India for the 2026 T20 World Cup in response.

Will the PCB’s Threats Change Things?

The PCB’s veiled threats to India’s cricket governing board is likely to hold no substance over time. Pakistan has had to retract in the past, succumbing to India’s demands as recently as a year ago. The PCB had to backtrack and accept Team India’s demands when they hosted the Asia Cup 2023.

PCB officials agreed to a plan that saw 9 out of 13 Asia Cup 2023 games played in Sri Lanka after previous charged threats. Realities in international cricket have not changed much since 2023, and the PCB is likely to succumb again.

Why Was Pakistan Chosen as the Host of ICC Champions Trophy 2025?

The ICC Champions Trophy was last held in 2017 and Pakistan ran away with a tight victory over arch-rivals India. It has been seven years since that tournament and the ICC hopes to revamp Champions Trophy cricket once more. Selecting Pakistan as hosts seemed to be a masterstroke, but India’s reluctance to visit their neighbours could scuttle the ICC’s plans.
