T20 World Cup: Do Bangladesh Really Need Mushtaq Ahmed As Spin Coach?

Former Pakistani cricketer Mushtaq Ahmed is the new Bangladesh spin-bowling coach. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed one of Pakistan’s few World Cup winners to their backroom staff in April 2024. Ahmed takes over this position from Rangana Herath, who left this role vacant in November 2023.

Mushtaq takes over in a full-time capacity after Sohel Islam managed this role for Bangladesh in recent games.

What is the BCB Saying About Mushtaq’s Appointment as Spin Coach?

Jalal Yunus is a BCB executive and weighed in on the current conversation about Mushtaq in a recent interview. He shed light on why BCB officials chose to appoint Ahmed over other qualified options for this current role.

Knowledge of the Bangladesh team and players

Yunus emphasized the important roles Mushtaq performed for Bangladesh in previous internationals.

“We have brought him with the Zimbabwe series and the T20 World Cup in mind. We have discussed long-term plans and about how the move benefits us. But nothing is certain. When a coach of Mushtaq Ahmed’s level comes to Bangladesh, seeing that we have a dearth of leg-spinners, it will be a big support for the promising ones, those apart from Rishad [Hossain], who is in the national side.”

Vast experience

“It will be a big thing that Mushtaq shares his vast knowledge with them. At the same time, when Mushtaq is with us, we can arrange spin hunt in every nook and corner of the country, it will be very good for us and good for the future of leg-spinners,” Yunus added.

World Cup knowledge

Mushtaq Ahmed was once a World Cup player, and his recent appointment may not be unconnected to Bangladesh’s T20 aspirations:

“It’s very rare to get leg-spinners now. But after he comes, some will be inspired. Mushtaq gives a lot of tips and given his experience of playing in World Cups along with his coaching and playing career, he will create a different atmosphere. It will be a big help and we might get that support from him,” the BCB chair concluded.

Fans expect the wealth of experience and information from Mushtaq to make a difference for the national team. Bangladesh has not been at their best lately, driving fans to hope Ahmed brings something special to the team.

What Qualities Does Mushtaq Ahmed Possess as a Coach for Bangladesh?

Nazmul Fahim is a popular cricket analyst and adviser to many successful cricketers. Fahim believes that analysts are looking at Mushtaq’s past position too frankly while ignoring his other qualities. Some qualities identified in Mushtaq by Fahim include:

Mentorship abilities

“He will look after all the spinners; it’s not like there will be separate coaches for left-arm spinners, right-arm spinners or a leg-spinner. We have not reached that place yet. When there is a pool of spinners, he will have opportunity to work. It would be very good if he can watch the players in the league going on.

No language or culture barrier

“I feel he is relatively more experienced compared to past appointments and he will have less of a language barrier and also have a better understanding of culture,” Nazmul added.

Experience on all spin types

“There has been too much emphasis placed on him being a leg-spinner. When it comes to spin, he will have expertise on all kinds of spin. He will also be a role model and an impact would be there if there is leg-spin camps or spin hunts,”
