Former South African cricketer Makhaya Ntini hailed the contribution of current Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma to his side’s current success:
“He [Bavuma] is an excellent captain. Not many give him the credit he deserves. He reads the game well and bats well. Most importantly, he is a good man manager. Getting the best out of your teammates and getting their respect as leader,” Ntini said.
Praise for Bavuma reached an all-time high when South Africa saw off the Australian Test team to lift their first-ever World Test Championship (WTC) title. The Proteas ended the 2023-25 cycle on a high after a string of poor results plagued their early campaign.
Temba Bavuma’s role as captain seems to have done the trick, as South Africa ended their decades-long wait for a major Test championship.
Bavuma’s Leads SA to Near‑Perfect Home Fortress
South Africa made their home Test games at the 2023-25 WTC cycle an unbearable experience for visiting teams. The side played six (6) games at home and registered 5 victories and a solitary loss against India.
It took India 2 days to dislodge the Proteas at home, but they went on to claim a victory by 5 wickets in the next encounter.
| Home WTC 2023–25 | Opposition | Result |
| Series 1, Test 1 | Sri Lanka | Won by innings |
| Series 1, Test 2 | Sri Lanka | Won by 7 wickets |
| Series 2, Test 1 | Pakistan | Won by 8 wickets |
| Series 2, Test 2 | Pakistan | Won by innings |
| Series 3, Test 1 | India | Lost by 7 wkts |
| Series 3, Test 2 | India | Won by 5 wickets |
Their home win-loss ratio (5.0) was the best of any team in the cycle to outclass Australia’s 3.5 after 7 out of 10 wins in home Tests.
Skipper Temba Keeps SA Strong on the Road
South Africa delivered outings on the home front and translated their fine form to secure victories on tours too. The Proteas registered a vital series victory in Bangladesh to bag their first triumph in Asia in a decade. Only Australia had a better away win-loss ratio (3.0) than Bavuma and his squad (1.5).
Bavuma Oversees Record‑Breaking Winning Streak
New Zealand handed South Africa a 2–0 defeat at home with their B-team before the Proteas went on an eight‑Test winning streak. The Proteas registered their longest-ever win tally in WTC history after succumbing to a second-fiddle Black Caps side.
South Africa languished in 7th during the mid-cycle season and needed to win every remaining Test to reach the final. Bavuma spurred his side to several victories to ensure they got to the final and secured victory.
| Winning Streak (After NZ loss) | Tests Won |
| vs West Indies (Away) | 1 |
| Remaining six Tests (all wins) | 6 |
| Total consecutive wins (including final) | 8 |
The Proteas’ 9‑match unbeaten run equals the joint‑longest WTC streak If we include the drawn Test against West Indies at Port‑of‑Spain (before the winning streak). The long streak equals Australia’s record from late 2021 to mid-2022 (six wins, three draws).
Bavuma’s Batting Brilliance
Bavuma led from the front with the bat after his appointment before this current cycle began:
| Metric | Value |
| Runs scored (13 innings) | 711 runs |
| Batting average (min. five inns.) | 59.30 |
| 50‑plus scores (last five Tests) | 6 |
| Average partnership (≥10 stands) | 60.35 runs |
The skipper had the second-highest average among 153 batters with a minimum of 5 innings throughout this cycle. Only Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis managed a better haul than Bavuma in this three-year Test cycle.
Bavuma also showed immense consistency in his last five Tests by recording a half-century or more in each of these games.
Bavuma Leads a Team of Match Winners
South Africa boasts immense as fans saw during their WTC‑cycle victories. Bavuma now leads a squad that has at least a dozen different players who either scored a century or four‑for before their triumphant campaign. Nine of these star players featured in the final XI against Australia.
| Achievement | Players |
| Hundred or four‑for in cycle wins | 15 |
| Different PoM awardees in cycle wins | 9 |
| Four‑wicket hauls by Kagiso Rabada | 5 |
| Verreynne’s centuries in cycle wins | 3 |
Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne struck the winning runs in the final and hit three centuries overall in the campaign. No other side in the WTC 2023-25 cycle equalled South Africa’s diversity numbers in century/four‑for or Player‑of‑the‑Match spread.
Bavuma Marshalls Proceedings at the World Test Championship Final
South Africa was chasing 69 on Day 4 and reached 282/5 to mark the second-highest chase at Lord’s in Test history. Bavuma (66) and Aiden Markram (136) laid the foundation of what would become a historic win for South African cricket after decades of waiting.
Kyle Verreynne’s cover drive also ensured the game will end in their favour against one of cricket’s most-successful teams of all time.
| Batting in Final | Runs |
| Aiden Markram (SA) | 136 |
| Temba Bavuma (SA) | 66 |
| Opposition top score | 75 |
| Bowling in Final | Wickets |
| Kagiso Rabada (SA) | 9 |
