Top Overseas Cricketers in the BBL 2024-25 draft

Several overseas cricketers from England, Pakistan, New Zealand, and other countries made the BBL 14 draft list.

Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) is set to take franchise cricket by storm with its anticipated 2024-25 draft picks. Cricketers from all over top leagues will converge Down Under from late 2024 to deliver fans a worthy spectacle. Overseas cricketers from many top foreign teams will play for participating franchises when the BBL begins.

Let’s check out the top overseas cricketers in the BBL 2024-25 draft as we await another round of high-stakes action in Australia.

Lockie Ferguson – New Zealand

New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson has been in blistering form in recent games and got an early draft pick for his effort. The pacer will play for Sydney Thunder throughout BBL 14.

Jacob Bethell – England

Bethell is just 20 years old but has shown enough quality to earn a BBL 2024-25 draft pick. The English cricketer has been on fire of late, smashing 731 runs across 39 Twenty20 (T20) innings. He also has a decent 23.5 average and 138.18 strike rate. Bethell will feature for the Melbourne Renegades at BBL 14.

Rishad Hossain – Bangladesh

Hossain’s performance at the T20 World Cup 2024 and other competitions earned him an early draft pick. He is a top overseas cricketer in the draft and can navigate competing in Australian weather. He will feature for the Hobart Hurricanes this season.

Top Overseas Players Left Out After the BBL 14 Draft

Jofra Archer

Archer’s career has not followed its earlier trajectory in recent years. The World Cup-winning cricketer’s performances dipped since England won the ODI World Cup after a series of unfortunate injuries. The Barbados-born, England pacer recently returned to competitive cricket at the T20 World Cup 2024. His performance was decent in games and seemed good enough to secure a BBL 14 draft spot.

Archer announced his availability for BBL 14, but no franchise risked acquiring his services at auction.

Alex Hales

Sydney Thunder got several consistent performances from Alex Hales for several seasons. Fans experienced shock when Hales was not considered for selection in this year’s draft. He didn’t get a nod from the Sydney Thunders or any other BBL side ahead of next season.

The English opener’s omission from BBL 14 is a surprising event, but he can look forward to a potential place in the ILT20. Some reports suggest BBL 14 franchises opted to not choose Hales since their season clashes with ILT20 cricket.

Shadab Khan

Many fans expected Shadab Khan to hold down a spot at BBL 14, but the Pakistani cricketer won’t be in any squad this season. Shadab had no franchise come for his services after proving his credentials in Australian cricket. His unpicked status comes as a surprise to fans who expected multiple teams to seek his skillset.

Khan offers a balanced wicket-taking skill in middle overs and provides vital swings while batting. He doubles as a gun fielder and can play well in several positions across the pitch.

Naseem Shah

Shah is another surprise player left out of BBL 14 among overseas cricketers. The young pacer has been on fire in recent games, managing impressive performances in recent outings. His growing popularity and impressive skillset drove several sports analysts to tag him as a hot pick pre-draft.

However, no franchise sought his services throughout the auction ahead of BBL 14. Naseem has an impressive scalp record (111 wickets across 108 matches) with a decent 5/20 best turnover.

Haris Rauf

Many cricket fans expected Haris Rauf to hold down a spot at any BBL franchise ahead of the next season. However, it was not to be since no franchise secured his services after the draft. Rauf plays well under Australian conditions and bagged 36 wickets in 22 previous BBL matches to register his quality.

BBL franchises snubbing Rauf was shocking, since the cricketer has been in fine form across other competitions.

When Will the BBL 14 Take Place?

Eight teams in the BBL 14 will lock horns from December 15, 2024 to January 27, 2025. Fans will get to see the very best cricketers in Australia and from across overseas teams perform in high-stakes encounters.
