Team India veteran batter Virat Kohli says he will not play at the ODI World Cup 2027 if he has to prove his worth before selection:
“If I can add value to the environment that I’m a part of and the environment feels like I can add value, I’ll be seen,” Virat said during a recent RCB Podcast, when asked about his stance before the next World Cup.
“If I’m made to feel like I need to prove my worth and my value, I’m not in that space,” he added in a bombshell revelation before India’s ODI calendar gets into its busy stretch.
“I Work Hard” – Kohli Expects to Walk Right In to ODI WC 2027 Squad
Kohli reveals that he believes his preparations are in order ahead of all ODIs and suggests readiness for games should never cause doubt:
“When I arrive to play, I put my head down, I work as hard, if not harder, than anyone else. And I play the game in the right way. You want me to run from boundary to boundary for 40 overs in an ODI game, I will do that without a complaint. Because I prepare accordingly,” the veteran cricketer said.
“I prepare for the fact that I will field 50 overs every ball like it’s the last ball I’m going to play in my career, and I will bat that way and I will run between the wickets that way, and I will do everything possible for the team,” he added. The legendary batsmen questioned why his preparedness should be under scrutiny after giving his best to international appearances:
“After operating like this, if I have to be in a place where I have to prove my worth and value, that place is not meant to be for me. And I am very clear in my head from that perspective.”
How Many ODIs Has Virat Played So Far?
Kohli has been involved in 311ODIs (as of May 22, 2026) and sits second in India’s all-time 50-over batting rankings (14,797 runs), only behind legendary Sachin ‘Master Blaster’ Tendulkar, who has 18,426 runs.
He is popular for chasing down hard targets as an ODI cricketer, with his average steadily climbing from 58.7 (first innings) to over 65.7 in second innings of games.
Does Virat Kohli Have a Good Average in South Africa?
Kohli boasts one of Team India’s top individual batting averages in South Africa. India is expected to play the bulk of their ODI WC 2027 matches across venues in South Africa where Kohli averages impressively. He currently averages at 76.3 after 20 ODIs played in South Africa.
“Tell me on day one” – Kohli appears impatient over selection suspense ahead of ODI WC 2027
“Look, if you go to your workplace, and if people say we believe in your abilities, and then a week later they start questioning the way you operate, it’s like, why?” he said.
“Either tell me on day one I’m not good enough or I’m not needed. Or if you’ve said I’m good enough and you say we’re not even thinking otherwise, then be quiet,” the cricketer concluded, in a tone that appeared quite confident of his potential to make India’s ODI WC 2027 squad.
Will Selectors Pick Kohli Outright for 2027 WC or Leave Him Out?
It is too early to tell if national team selectors will choose to drop Kohli after his recent comments became public. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) initiated a new selection approach in recent years that has been largely successful, particularly in limited-overs cricket.
BCCI selectors led by former cricketer Ajit Agarkar oversaw the exit of Kohli from Test cricket and could leave him out of 50-over internationals to avoid unsettling the team’s balance. Kohli’s comments may rub off as confrontational, and selectors could exclude him from their ODI WC 2027 solely based on what he said during that podcast.
