What exactly is wrong with this Pakistan Cricket team?

The Pakistan cricket team continues to grapple with several performance issues, and there seems to be no end in sight. Recent changes to personnel, governing officials, strategy, and so on doesn’t seem to provide the much-needed effect Pakistanis want to see in their team. Fans have had to grapple with horrifying performances for years, and the players have not been happy about their output so far.

Let’s explore what really is wrong with the current Pakistan cricket team and why so much work is necessary to reposition one of the sport’s top sides for glory.

What Exactly is Wrong With this Pakistan Cricket Team?

The Pakistan cricket team continue to fail when it matters most, making the Imran Khan glory days seem so distant. Several problems continue to make all things go wrong for the Pakistan cricketers, and it seems these issues may not abate any time soon.

Injury problems

Injuries to key players before or during major cricket events have had adverse effects on the Pakistan cricket team in recent years. The team has had to grapple with injuries to talismanic bowlers, batsmen, or wicketkeepers at different tournaments in the past.

Such injury woes affected Naseem Shah before the ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2023, hampering the Falcons’ chances for a second title.

Contract issues

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has had to deal with several contract rows in recent years, especially with senior team players. Disagreements over current payment schemes for all players have caused issues between players and PCB officials in the past, signalling a rift brewing within the team.

Most contract problems have gone public in recent years, with some news reports highlighting this problem in late 2023.

In-team rows

Cracks in the Pakistan setup became more evident than ever before during and after the ICC World Cup 2023. Team issues were so public that fans repeatedly accused several Pakistan team players of laziness and cowardice.

Unnecessary programs

Many commentators view the recommendation by Pakistan’s cricket board for military training is unnecessary. PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi recently recommended a 10-day military training program for all Pakistan team players. The chief signalled the team’s lacklustre performances and unwillingness to commit during some gameplays as reasons for this training.

Occasional complacency

The Pakistan cricket team experienced several issues with seemingly-lowly squads throughout recent tournaments, sparking widespread discussions about different departments in the team. Teams that could have been light work in recent years became quite difficult for Pakistan to overcome, signalling increased complacency among the players.

Captaincy trouble

Many successful Pakistan cricket teams in the past had one common denominator – a stable captaincy. However, it has not been so for Babar Azam in recent years. The cricketer had to deal with repeat criticism for every player’s poor performance until he stepped down from his role after the ICC World Cup 2023.

Shaheen Afridi took up the captaincy role; however, indications from the PCB suggest that he may not be Naqvi’s anointed candidate for that position. Instability in leadership throughout the Pakistan cricket team has continued to hamper their progress in recent tournaments; a stable leadership circle could help the Men in Green achieve better outings in future events.

Poor planning

The PCB isn’t left out from management troubles as the country’s cricket governing body continues to go through its set of challenges. Three PCB chairmen have held the post since 2022, scuttling Pakistan’s chances to plan a smooth World Cup campaign. Fans hope the recent appointment of Mohsin Naqvi may provide much-needed support to help Pakistan regain their position among top cricket nations.
