Who will be next PCB Chairman? Rashid Latif or Najam Sethi

The PCB chairman position is vacant after Zaka Ashraf resigned from his role in the management committee. Ashraf only assumed this role in July 2023 and leaves a vacuum in one of the toughest jobs in world cricket. Three front-runners are in the race, but it looks more likely that Latif will secure the position.

Rashid Latif looks more likely to emerge as the new Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman.

Let’s look at names and profiles of top contenders for Pakistan’s top job in cricket administration.

Rashid Latif

Rashid Latif is a retired Pakistan cricketer and one of the most popular names tipped to become PCB chairman. Latif played as a wicketkeeper-batter and captained the senior national team during his playing career. He scored over 12000 runs across all formats in his career, making him one of the game’s most prolific exports from Pakistan.

Latif has always been concerned about the game’s development in Pakistan and could be an ideal option to lead cricket administration in the country.

Najam Sethi Has the Support of Ex-Pakistan Players But Is Unlikely to Run

In his previous bid to become PCB chairman, Sethi enjoyed the support of several veteran Pakistan players. Respected former players like Wasim Akram expressed their admiration for Sethi and what he brings to cricket in Pakistan:

I support him all the way and the main reason is PSL. Many people before him discussed the idea of PSL but no one was able to materialise the plans. Sethi not only made is possible, but organised two successful editions of Pakistan’s top class T20 league and also the final of the second edition in Lahore,” Akram said.

Four years are enough [to understand any system] and now he knows which person to use for what job. He is fully aware of all the staff and management, which makes him the best candidate,” he added.

Many ex-Pakistan cricketers share Akram’s view about Sethi’s role in developing cricket as a national sport. However, Sethi’s age (75 years old) could hinder any chance of his emergence as PCB chair.

Mohsin Naqvi
