Why Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer are playing the Duleep Trophy 2024?

Indian internationals Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer will reportedly participate in the Duleep Trophy 2024 based on regulatory interventions. There are rumours that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) insisted on certain players taking part in this competition.

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are in India D ahead of the Duleep Trophy 2024. Fans will get to see an exciting spectacle in the tournament this season as more experienced players will participate. However, fans didn’t expect players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer to earn spots in this edition.

Why is Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer Playing in the Duleep Trophy 2024?

Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer are in the Duleep Trophy 2024 to prove their readiness for competitive international cricket. Current BCCI Secretary Jay Shah explained the new format adopted to assess players returning to competitive international cricket.

The BCCI exec claims every player who recovers from an injury must play domestic cricket according to new guidelines. He made this known with an illustration of Ravindra Jadeja’s time out before returning to international competitions:

“When Ravindra Jadeja had got injured, I was the one who called him and asked him to play a domestic game. It’s certain now, whoever gets injured and goes out, can only come into the Indian team after proving his fitness in domestic cricket,” the BCCI Secretary said.

There is no shortage of talent in every position within India’s current cricket setup. Allowing injured and returning players prove their fitness and performance is a reliable way to test their readiness for international tournaments. Such a path to return also boosts competitiveness among players in the national team.

Why are Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Not in the Duleep Trophy 2024?

Jay Shah shed more light on the exclusion of top Team India performers from the Duleep Trophy 2024. Several top players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and others will not take part in this year’s edition. The BCCI Secretary cited workload management as a major reason for their exclusion:

“It doesn’t make sense to add to Virat and Rohit’s load by asking them to play domestic cricket. They run the risk of getting injured. You also need to look at England and Australia. None of their top players play domestic cricket. We must treat our players respectfully and not treat them like servants,” Mr. Shah said.

Why is Team India Leaving Several Key Players Out of the Duleep Trophy 2024?

Top Team India cricketers already have a huge workload ahead of a busy cricket calendar after the Duleep Trophy 2024. The team looks set to make back-to-back World Test Championship (WTC) Finals after losing to Australia in 2023. Team India hopes to lift the 2025 WTC Final trophy and would seek to rest their top players ahead of qualifying.

India has some essential games on schedule and would require victories to seal their WTC Final spot. Resting key players could help the team achieve better results as they aim to continue their successful run in ICC tournaments.
